Hey Guys,

Thanks for taking a look at this.

I've been lurking these forums for a while getting some good info but this is my first post because, well, I'm stuck.

I've been trying to track down the source of this noise for some time now. It's kind of hard to describe which is why I posted a video.

It sounds like some type of bearing noise but it seems to be coming from the vibration damper/crank shaft. It doesn't happen all the time. Only after the engine is warm and it follows the engine RPMs.

I've heard of worn dampers making a kind of banging or knocking noise but never anything like this. Plus, as I understand, there are no bearings in the damper that could wear out.

I've eliminated the possibility of bad accessories by removing the belts and running the engine briefly without them so I know it's not the alternator / power steering pump / or water pump. Plus as you'll notice in the video the noise gets louder as the camera moves toward the bottom of the grill by the crankshaft. (fyi this could be a useful new technique for locating bad engine bearings)

Any input as to what this might be would be greatly appreciated.

Mahalo

Maybe water pump or that belt could be loose or worn out.........If you have some belt dressing spray a little on while its running , if it quite's down that may be it or just on hook it for a minute of run time......sounds like a belt or pulley being loose.

Thanks Tarry,

I took both belts off and ran it with no accessories and the noise was still there so I know it's not the belts or either of the pumps or alternator.

You might want to try using an automotive stethoscope, purchased from a local auto parts store to better locate that noise. You might want to consider a noisy timing chain, but I am just guessing there. While using a timing light, if the flash moves up and down the scale that is a good indicator of a worn out chain.

Thanks, I tried the ol' wooden dowel trick and to the best of my assesment it seems to be coming from the crank shaft area. I haven't tried an actual stethoscope yet though. I'll have to check on the timing chain as well.

I've had the timing stretch and start slapping the cover to where it had a knock I suppose it could be rubbing it and cause the noise you are getting. If it has a lot of miles you might want to check it.
