Problems with rear right axle shaft

When I got the jeep the rear hub was spinning on axle. The guy I got it from told me about and what was "needed" to fix it. I replaced the shaft with what came out of it. (Dorman OE Solutions - Axle Shaft) basically axle and then hub assembly with a tiny little key that holds the hub on the axle but the axle and shaft do not spline together. I drove it across town and it was already loose, and starting to chew up the new axle. Can I replace the hub assembly with a solid hub/axle shaft? Or what do I do to fix the problem?

Sort of sounds like the hub is just loose enough to put the right kind of pressure on the key to tear it up. I've never been a big fan of keys even though they are used in a lot of assemblies. You might be able to find a hub, but at what cost? With the AMC20 rear axle most people use one piece axle kits to replace OEM. Moser makes the best setup. At this point I would say cost will be your biggest factor. Find a hub, maybe that fixes, or go with a different system. Maybe someone on the form has some experience with the Dorman setup, I don't. So I would have to resort to a complete axle swap with the Moser setup if this happened on my Jeep. Good luck and keep us posted.

This is a known problem with the 2-piece axles, that AMC used in the mod 20 rear. You will need to replace both the axle and hub. The axle nut torque is 250 ft/lbs plus tighten to align the cotter pin holes.
I would suggest looking at a 1 piece axle conversion. I have had very good luck with Moser and have installed several sets for friends.

I also recommend diching the two piece axles and upgrade to one piece axles. I still have the two piece axles in mine if I ever have a problem with them they will be gone I'm not going to waste money on a weak link. IMO

Before you ditch the current set-up, did you torque the nut down to the specified 250 ft lbs ? The axle makes the splines into the hub as you tighten down the nut.
There is also a factory measurement to ensure that the hub is pressed onto the shaft all the way by tightening the nut. You measure from the face of the hub to the end of the shaft.
It's not as bad as everyone makes it out to be. You just have to follow the factory guidelines.
But....if the replacement parts of today are cheap off shore junk, then it might be time to bite the bullet and go as others have suggested.
But...this forum and others are just full of axle bearing problems with the one piece axles...the choice will be yours.

it has been a long time since i had the 2 piece axles in mine, I spun a hub and tried replacing it and broke my ratchet, at the time I did not have an impact wrench capable of 250 pounds so i had to stand on a cheater pipe to tightened the nut breaking my ratchet in the process good luck. if in the budget spend the money on 1 piece axles and you wont have to ever worry about spinning a hub again
