I had an '83 CJ-7 which I used as my primary / only vehicle but it rusted out. I would like to get another though with the fiberglas body. Currently I have a '12 Jeep Patriot.
I'm, 6'4" I had a CJ7 once (R.I.P.) as I remember only the driver side seat was adjustable and the passenger side was a bit tight for me, I sat in the passenger seat of a CJ5 (don't know the year) and my head was over the windshield and I had NO legroom at all....

I sat in the driver side of a CJ2 and that was tight not quite undriveable but certainly not comfortable for a trip.

as I am now in the market once again for a CJ can anyone tell me if the CJ5 has similar driver side legroom as the 7 or should I just scrap them as potential vehicles for me altogether or just certain years (I know they stretched it eventually). Being the biggest of my potential occupants I figure if I can fit comfortably anyone else should too, guess I'll just have to 'sit around' a bit and see where I fit in eh.

Comments appreciated.

:)Early CJ5 1954-1971 / 81" Wheelbase
1972-1983.............../ 83.5" "
CJ6 1955-1971......../ 101" " and 1972-1981 104" WB
CJ7 1976-1986......../ 93.3 "

Some of us love the Early Iron and we deal with the wheelbase by trimming the drivers side fender tub and moving the seat back. From 1972 they gain a little room.........and of course the CJ-7s are like driving a Coupe DeVille!

Nothing but personal preference!

:D:D:D:D

My five is a bit tight. The tilt wheel made a world of difference. You have to be careful about seats, the aftermarket seats take up room where you don't have it to spare, both height and leg room.

Terry is right, a CJ7 is luxurious by comparison.:D

I made the switch from Budweiser to Coors Light a few years back. I should be fine fitting in my 5 by the time I get it running again.:D:chug:

As far as the seats being adjustable you can bolt in a seat slider ( atleast on later models ) to the passenger side as well. The stretch in the later CJ5 was in the nose of the Jeep so I dont think that will really help you. The wheelwell "notch" is a popular mod for taller Jeepers. It allows the seat to move back farther but takes away a little tire clearance. Id look for a CJ7 with a tilt colum if I were that tall. Being vertically challenged at 5'5" its hard for me to relate though. :)

AS others have said the CJ7 has the most leg room. Mine has as much as my Cherokee.

Thanks for the replies, I guess I'll just have to find one and sit in it to see for sure.

I am not as big as you but 1 of my fishing buddies is 6'3" about 280 & he fits fine in my 7. And as mentioned putting a slider in the passenger seat only takes about a hour. If I remember correctly I had to drill new holes to mount the seat to the slider or was it the slider to the seat frame.
Good luck took me 2 years searching for my 82.

Billofthenorth, I am a bit over 6'2" and I am comfortable behind the wheel of my CJ7 with the seat all the way back.

I did have to move my passenger seat as far back as I could to stop my one of my tall friends from complaining.

Instead of adding the seat hardware like the driver's side has, I made custom brackets that I attached to the bottom of the seat. That way I could move the seat all the way back and leave the original mounting bracket in place.

Using the drivers side seat moving hardware on the passenger side seat is a good way to go too. I didn't know it could be done that way when I modified my passenger seat.

I have owned a CJ7 before, the unknown is the smaller CJs and since I am looking again I'd like to eliminate from the search any that are absolutely too tight for me.
Like I said I guess I'll have to hunt up a 4x4 club or gathering and see if the owners will let me sit in the driver's seats to see how well I fit.

Thanks for the info on moving seats, something to take into account for the future.

Thanks again for your replies and comments.
