My CJ7 has an AMC/Jeep Trac-Lok rear differential.

I'm hoping to hear from someone who has been successful in removing the cover bolts on a similar diff. After several weeks of dealing with and finally loosening 10 of the 12 Torx bolts, two (upper) bolts remain. Each one is now stripped so the T40 torx bit sockets are useless.

Any ideas? Thanks!

Simon

Jack it up. Support the frame so that the diff hangs low. Weld a bolt on to the head. Then use a regular 6 point socket.

I use this method for pretty much every torx bolt that strips.

If you don't have a welder. Use the same process except grind the head off. (This will destroy your diff cover. But makes a perfect time to upgrade) Remove the cover grab the remaining bolt with a pair of vise grips and work them out.

Then clean everything thoroughly install new cover, 6 point bolts, (I use stainless) fluid etc. Drive enjoy.

P.S. if you buy a new cover buy a heavy iron one for off roading and they typically come with a drain port.

As a secondary way, grind the heads off. Drill a hole and use an extractor.
Screw extractor -->> (Link)-> Google Search -<
Only problem is the top two bolts leave you almost zero room between the diff and gas tank. Most likely can't get a drill in there

That kinda true. That's why I have a right angle chuck...
