Reinsralling tranny

Reinsralling tranny
If you don't remove the pressure plate you don't need the alignment tool.

So when putting tranny back in, do I need to grease the main shaft, throw out bearing, or linkage for 4wd shifter? Or is it as simple as putting it all back together and tightening bolts?

LIGHTLY grease the spline'd shaft the clutch rides on.
Wet finger with engine oil and rub the tip of the shaft the pilot bearing rides on.

Okay, this is the weekend. Have all the parts you all have told me to get, have a couple friends and my oldest son (18) coming over to help. Really looking forward to putting her back together. Will keep ya'll updated.

Figured this is a good time to replace Transmission fluid. I drained it yesterday and was going to add some in today but wanted to ask how much do I put in since there is no dip stick also is there a brand or type of Transmission fluid that I need to get? BTW, is a T-15 tranny. Thanks again Jeepers. :)

The fill plug on the top or the one on the bottom that i emptied it from? Also what type of oil, read something about only using GL4. Is that correct?

Fill it AFTER you get it installed. THe Transmission and Transfer Case share their Transmission oil. So you should drain both before you try to install. Why? Because you will save a big ol' mess. Tilt the Transfer Case down and oil WILL leak out the breather hole in the back.

Just because they share oil doesn't mean you don't have to fill BOTH. Since you have them out and can get a good look at them you will find drain and fill holes in both cases. It doesn't get more simple to fill the cases with oil. Fill until oil leaks out of the filler hole. Once the jeep is running the oil wil flow through both cases. You will need one of those big squirt pumps to get the oil in the filler hole. They used to be hard to find, but now they are easy to get in a parts store.

So you are saying, drain Transfer Case also. And refill both tranny and Transfer Case , not just tranny? You are also saying don't fill fluid until installed? I thought I read somewhere to do it prior to installation due to difficult to get to fill holes when installed. I am not questioning you, just making sure I understand fully.

I probably should have mentioned draining the fluids from both before you started the project. When I pulled my Transmission /Transfer Case , I didn't and made a right ugly mess out of my driveway, spilling oil about everywhere. Draining it out of the cases would have made life a great deal easier.

If you are really good you might get things to line up without tilting the assembly enough to make oil leak out the breather, but I bet you'd be the rare exception to the rule. I'm not really saying that the advice someone gave you is wrong. Pre-fill most certainly will work. But I can make a mess from about anything and I hate having Transmission grease running down my shirt.

Yes it can be a pain to fill onceinstalled, but with the squirt pump I mentioned it is easy. These are great big versions of what you find on liquid hand soap containers. I like using Lucus gear oil for my Transmission .... any decent gear oil will due, Arizona is hot so I like my Transmission oil/grease on the heavy side, in cold country it should be on the lighter side ..... Their product comes in, I'm thinking quart size containers so I finally got a pump that fits their containers. These things move a lot of oil in each pump so it's not a long or laborious job to fill an empty Transmission or Transfer Case .

I can't say it any more clearly than I did in the above post, drain Both and refill BOTH seperately (when they are married together). Filling BOTH seperately fills all the pockets and dips in both cases where filling one won't do that.

Awesome, thanks again Hedge. I looked up liquid pump and see exactly what you are saying and how that will make job easier and not "as" dirty. Lol. How many quarts am I going to need to tranny and Transfer Case ?

Get the gallon bottle of Sta-lube gear oil with the pump.

Sorry guy, I really don't remember how much. I bought some and had some on hand, then pumped until everything was full. ...... Lumpy probably has the best solution, remember, about any decent and probably some not so decent gear lubes will work just fine. Gears like to be wet and slippery, they really don't care how they get that way.
