Hello all, I recently purchased a 77 CJ5 with a spool in the rear end, little did I know that a spool is not very street friend and my tires are getting eaten up everytime I drive around town. My question is what do I need to purchase in order to put the rear end back to stock or more street friendly, keep in mind I use my Jeep about 60% on-road and 40% off road. Also on a tight budget.. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

you need a new ring gear carrier. yes a spool locks both axles together at all times.

The spool might be worth some bucks to the right person, maybe a trade for what you need to get back to stock. You will need a complete AMC20 carrier with bearings. Depending on what gear ratio you are running I believe there is two different carriers available. I cant recall the break point of the ratio for which one you'll need. The came with anything from 2:73', 3:31's 3:73's etc. parts should be reasonable, correct setup of the R&P is critical or your diff will suffer an untimely demise.

Im pretty sure I kicked a AMC20 carrier in my shop last week. If it is a 20 and the right one for your gears Ill send itto you for the price of shipping. What gear ratio is your rear?

You should look inside the housing to verify whether you have a spool or a mini-spool. If it is a mini, you could replace it with a lock-right or similar posi unit or just replace the spider and side gears.

If rlitaveczis right you'd have an easy time getting back to stock if it's only a mini spool. But a mini spool puts a lot of force on the carier. For that reason they are not as common as a regular spool.

an open differential won't cost much. The big expense would be paying someone to install it. It could be hundreds of dollars.
