I would suggest finding out how the system operates. So you know just how to take it apart. Personally, I would keep the egr and smog pump operational as it keeps the combustion chambers cooler and the pcv valve hooked up, so you don't have to smell all that blow by from the crankcase. The fuel tank vent system has to stay so the tank can drain correctly. I like having a crankcase breather for air into the carnkcase. Keep in mind that your states smog laws can easily change also.

If you decide to remove the smog system, you will need to plug the exhaust manifold air tube ports. Check these guys out:
Exhaust Manifold 7 pc Plug Set GW 1974-1991 - Team Grand Wagoneer
These are the plugs I used on my AMC 304 when we got rid of the headers that the PO put on.
They will also be of interest to you since you are now the proud owner of a Cherokee. :)

Besides using the plugs in the link Bass posted above.
I would remove the tubes, diverter valve, hoses, and pump.
There is a small hole on top of the pump that is often mistaken for a place to add oil for the shaft, it's not for oil, but it is a vent.

Thanks all... I'd like to get to this asap, putting it near the top of my to do list. I should make other work a bit easier without those parts present. Like I said too, I want the option of re-installing it if it were to become necessary.

Would you be willing to sell all of it? My 78 had it and it has been removed and I'm afraid it is going to fail the smog test when I take it in.

Well I would but the reason I want to keep them is in the hopes that one of my thousands of resumes gets me work in your state.... My family and I are chomping at the bit to get out there.
