I am attempting to install a fresh AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l in a 80 CJ7 I replaced the rubber mounts on the existing brackets The engine doesnt sit straight between the frame rails now. It looks to run toward the passenger side a couple degrees of centerline.I can move the motor closer to straight if I pull the Transfer Case but I feel like thats going to put undue stress on the mounts.
Can anyone tell me whats going on with this?

Just so we are on the same page.

you are replacing a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l with a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l ? or are you replacing a V8 with a l6??

I think you are replacing a l6 with a l6 so I will say I believe you are Ok if you have all three mounts bolted in place. I find it best if none of the mounts are bolted tight until all are in place and the engine has found its most comfortable center.

If you are saying that the engine is 2 degrees off straight pointing toward the passengers side I do not think you have a problem.

as long as you didn't need a come a long or 6' cheater bar to line up all three mounts I say you are good.:D

I6 for I6 two degrees is an estimate, but The drive shafts will line up with out binding the u Joints.... No come alongs or six foot cheaters were used..... I did have to SLOT the holes on the Transfer Case skid plate to get them to line back up with the new rubber mounts in

What I do with the skid plate is to lift and mount it to the TC mount and then bolt it to the frame. And yes , there is a little bit of persuasion applied but not more than what I can do with just a little muscle.

I am going to suggest that there is a possibility that the mounts are not what one might call "precision" parts. A couple of degrees or 3/16" difference between parts would not be surprising.:D
