Reverse lights not working

Reverse lights not working
With switch in the tranny key on in reverse no tone. I put into 1st tone.
Is this switch wired right ?

Sounds like the switch is good
Key on and a tone? Your meter makes a tone when you are checking continuity.
It sounds like you are using your meter wrong. If you have the meter set to ohms or continuity you should not have the key on. You should have the wires to the switch disconnected.
If you have your meter set to volts you can turn on the key.

Confirm you are ck'n across the 2 terminals only?
Set meter on 'OHM'--
In "R" the circuit should close and you should have tone.
That's how every reverse switch is that I have ever ck'd.

But don't turn on the key. Or better yet disconnect at least one wire when checking the switch.
You don't want voltage on the switch when you are trying to check ohms or continuity.

If you can see the terminals-The plug is off the switch and therefore no power to the switch.
That's why I wanted him to use a 'jumper' on the plug to eliminate the switch all together, and to 'prove' the circuit.
Now, one other deal-The plug itself might be bad. BTDT.

will any setting in ohm be good ? I am checking switch with no power to it, or do i need to check with power wire connected ?
I am rookie with this thanks

Any ohm setting will work. You will either have 0 ohms or infinite ohms. I like lumpy's idea. Short the 2 wires together but make sure they don't touch ground or anything else. I think the problem is at the light sockets.

Check the terminals on the switch, not the wires.

Your ck'n on the 2 terminals on the switch-correct?
How old is the battery in your test meter? You have the test leads in the correct ports for OHM ck, correct.
You should have continuity in "R", and open circuit in 1st.

Touch the leads of the meter when on OHMs together and what do you see on the screen?

check terminals only 0 ohm, i think no power is now coming to plug. that was my next question.
A little background knowledge:
When you are checking ohms you are checking how easy electricity can go through the thing. You don't want voltage on it then. A wire should have 0 ohms because it should be very easy for electricity to go through a wire. When all you care about is if it has 0 ohms or infinite ohms you are checking for continuity.

WHen you are checking voltage you are checking electrical power. To check voltage you have the key on and you want 12 volts because 12 volts should be able to turn on the light.

Can you tell me the make and model # of your meter?

OK then-Please confirm following
Red lead is in the right side port-
Black lead is in center port-
Turn you dial to the speaker icon in the OHMS section(look for black bar instead of blue)-You will hear a tone when you have a good circuit. Confirm by touching the 2 leads together.
Make a note of the screen reading when you touch the 2 leads together.
Now-Put tranny in reverse, ign OFF. Put a test lead on each terminal of the switch. What does the meter tell you??
Put tranny in neutral, ign OFF. Now what does the meter show.
