running hot

hey guys I got a problem, I put a new thermostat in my AMC 304 . When it's running and not moving it gets hot and pegs the temp gauge. It blows anti freeze out the radiator overflow hose. but when I drive it for a little while it cools down the needle on the temp gauge reads about half way. What's wrong and how do I fix it HELP.

Check to see if you installed the thermostat correctly...

Sure could. The "pill" goes to the bottom.

the way i remember is the spring part of the t stat goes into the engine.
