Ok, here is my question: I have taken the body off my 74' CJ5 and I'm going to sell it. My issue is, it has a plate on it with the VIN number. If I sell the body, does the pink go with it? I'm not going to use it ever again but I'm not sure what the rules are on this and I don't want a VIN in my name with someone else. Thoughts?

You keeping the frame?

If its riveted on drill out the rivets and keep the plate to put on the new tub

If you're going to title the frame with a new tub, some states want to see the old tub w/VIN tag along with the new rig. Check your state laws. :D

As 73CJ said, call your DMV. I have a cousin who lives in California as you do that had some kind of a hiccup in his title/registration on his CJ so he had to register it at my dad’s address in Oregon; did it for years. Titles tend to follow the frame as the VIN should be stamped on the frame too. Try looking on top of the frame over the rear passenger side wheel. It could be up around the engine bay too.

Yes, I'm going to rebuild from the ground up using the frame and anything else that's strong.

I almost did that but I wasn't sure legally.

Good point, my Aunt is an LA county Sheriff and her buddies didn't know either. We will do this tomorrow.

I just looked at the frame and all I see is the number "78" stamped into it. So, unless it was the 78th vehicle ever made, I don't think that's it lol.

The help is much appreciated guys.

Just an FYI, I think selling your body is considered prostitution and that's illegal. :)

Just an update here:

I My Aunt called the local DMV and i have to get either a "salvage Cert." on it or a "Nonrepairable vehicle cert." to be able to sell the body with VIN attached to it. There also has to be a statement in the selling of the body/part with the VIN stating how it is in one of the above Cert's. Either cert. is only $19.00. Then, i can do what i want.

After the build, i just take it to the DMV for inspection (depending on how i want to classify it) and get a new VIN and title setup on it.
