Hey all,

I had an annoying brake saga that resulted in new pads, extended lines, and a new prop valve. The jeep stops wayyyy better than ever, but the pedal is insanely sensitive. Is there a way to fix that? I keep accidentally locking the brakes up.

I would think some of that would be from changing the proportioning valve. Did you replace it with one just for your CJ? Or possibility other modifications to the brake system.

Manual or power brakes?
You're sure, that you have the correct MC installed?
Details on your brake system would be good to know, also.

I replaced the master cylinder and booster in 2014. The brakes worked pretty good since then (though I was never able to lock them up before now). I installed a 4" BDS lift so I also installed extended brake lines. The lines wouldnt bleed so I took it to a local shop due to time restrictions and they diagnosed a bad proportioning valve. They replaced it (the new one looks exactly the same) and bled the brakes. I cant argue that it stops better, because it definitely does. It is just hard to slow down rather than to stop.

Usually CJ brake issues are having the vehicle stop poorly, like from oversize tires. I did find this though:https://www.bendix.com.au/tech-tips/brake-problems/brake-grab

Yeah I never thought I would be complaining about my CJ brakes being TOO good. I will check the bolts and such on the caliper. In 2016 I did new calipers, pads, bearings, shoes, cylinders, springs, etc. They were good but not great, the shop that did my proportioning valve replaced my ceramic pads with organic pads saying that was the reason my brakes were never great. He was definitely right in that it locks the tires up now...it is just annoying that it locks them up all the time.

Front and back lock up or just the back? If they bought a combo valve for disk/disk then the metering valve is missing and the prop valve is set at a different rate. This could cause the rears to lock up alot.

Get the P/N for that P'valve, and confirm with a parts house it's the correct one.

It is the front brakes that are locking up easily.
If it's the front I would check the vacuum booster also. Back in the 70s I worked for Firestone doing three to four brake jobs a day. Best I can remember there is a adjustment that you can make to the booster to control sensitivity.
