1984 CJ7 , 4 inch spring lift. What shocks are you guys running that seems to ride a little better. Need to change mine. Thanks

I have an 84 with a Rough Country 4" lift and run Monroe 58647 on both the front and rear. You have to replace the rubber bushings on one end of the front ones. These are coil-over type shocks and do better than the ones that came in the Rough Country lift kit. I tried some Skyjackers and they sucked and got returned.

Roughly a 9 to 10" range from extended to collapsed. Now obviously that depends on your use, tire size, etc. Normally you want about 2-to-1 on shock travel - meaning 2 more inches to collapse for every 1 more inch to extend. With a shock travel of 9" and with your 4" suspension lift and current 21" length sitting level, you want a collapsed length about 6" under your current 21" and an extended length about 3" over your current 21". So you're targeting about 15" collapsed and 24" extended (9" of travel and 2-to-1 ratio). Of course some longer travel never hurts, and about 10" is very common. Just keep the target range in mind (15" collapsed to 24" extended).

The Skyjacker M9558 could work with an eye to eye extended length of 24.84" and a collapsed length of 14.82". The Quadratec Hydro 7's have lengths of 24.94" to 14.91". Procomp Pro-X 924509B have lengths of 24.84" and 14.82".

Larger tires (I have 35") may require less collapsed length or extended bump stops to keep the tires from rubbing when fully collapsed. A different rear end (swapped out the AMC20 ) where the diff might hit the gas tank skid plate needs to be considered. Road use vs. rock climbing. So there are other factors to look at.
