Should I get this?

Just ran across this ad on a Facebook selling page. Should I get it for my CJ7 ? I,m an uneducated newbie when it comes to the grease monkey stuff. Trying to teach myself to be better at twisting wrenches. I,m not sure if this would be a good fit or not.

Jeep Dana 44 rear axle. Passenger side offset. 61 inches wide. 4.55 gears. New pads and turned drums. $100 Obo. Came out of a 79 Wagoneer.

Thats gonna be too wide. Your current axle is 56 in wide.

The offset for the diff would work with a Spicer 18 Transfer Case but not the Dana 300 with a center rear output yoke.

It's my understanding that a Dana 44 would be a heavier duty rear axel than the AMC I have now. I saw it for sale for only $100 and thought maybe snagging it for some day in the future. Thanks all for the help.

To match your front axle you need a wide trac rear Dana 44 out of a 86 CJ7 . Hard to find , but not impossible. I see them now and then for $400 or so around here. Thats the only one that will bolt in with no modification.

That is true, except I think you misunderstand that not every Dana 44 is the same. The 86 cj7s had a Dana 44 rear but that is a different axle than what a Wagoneer had in the 70s. The Wagoneer axle is much wider plus it is offset because the waggy and cherokee had the t.c rear output in line with the front out put. Too get that Dana 44 to fit you would have to cut off and move the spring perches, which if I remember correctly, on my old Wagoneer was spring over not under like the cj.then you'd have to weld perches in place where they match the cj springs.
Then your rear axle would have your tires sticking way out from the body because the waggy is wider so you would need extended flares cover the wheels.

THEN you would need to get a Wagoneer front axle to match your 100 dollar rear axle, and oh by the way 4.55 was not common in waggy so the likely hood of the gear ratio matching is slim. So now you are looking at re gearing a front axle.

THEN you have to buy extended flares for the front as well, also you have cut off and reweld the front axle perches.

You also have to account for the fact that the offset pumpkin will not be in line with your Dana 300 out put.

Your better off putting in one piece shafts and trussing your AMC20 then re gearing to your desired gear. It would possibly be cheaper but it also would be a fraction of the time and energy in work.

As everyone else said, the offset 44 would not be a good one for you.
You could look for one from a Passport or Rodeo, I believe they are 59 or 60" wide and have disc brakes. There's always the 8.8 at 59" wide.
You would need to weld perches on any of them.
