Shunt anyone?????

I want to convert my 6 volt jeep to a 12 volt single wire alt. and maintain the original looking guages. I found an original looking 12 volt gas guage but can't find an original looking - + 100 amp guage. I see some info on the net about using a shunt with the original - + 50 amp guage but have not found any details, style or size. I don't have enough of an electrical back ground to work this issue out. Can anyone help resolve this?

A shunt diverts some of the current away from the meter. The size of the shunt is determind by the amount of amps in the circuit. A shunt produces heat when in use. Given the amount of cold cranking amps in a 12v battery, I would advise against using any shunts not specifically designed to be used with an amp meter. The resulting amount of heat produced could burn something.

All of that being said, is it possible to find a shunt you could use. Yes, but I would not feel good about recommending one. Trying to find the right amp meter would be a better choice. Maybe do away with the amp meter.....a voltage meter is about all you really need. Unless you are running lots of light or electrical gear, an amp meter will always read about the same valvue anyway.
