CJ7 I'm considering purchasing, but has a issue. Need advice.
I'm looking at purchasing a semi-restored 1983 CJ7 . Here are the specs he provided.

92K Miles

Engine:
- AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l cu in (AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l L) AMC I6 99.4 PS (73 kW; 98 hp), 261 N·m (193 lb·ft)
- Optima 12v red battery (Brand new)
- 2 barrel carburetor
Exterior:
- Black Glossy Paint (2 year old)
- Hard top included
Exhaust:
- Hedman Standard-Duty Uncoated Headers
- Dual Exhaust with Flow Master Mufflers
Transmission :
- 5 Speed Manual
Interior:
- New seats, front and rear (rear seat is a fold up, but has not been attached to the body)
- Includes hard doors, new interior panels, new interior door handles, new exterior handles, new weather stripping (currently disassembled)
- New carpet, thick rubber backing
- Bikini top
- Roll bar padding

He said there are 3 issues that he's knows of.

#1. Fuel Gauge dead. Says fuel tank and sending unit have been replaced.
#2. On cold start you have to hit the throttle pedal a few times. Warm start is fine.
#3. Will slip out of 2nd gear. “The 2nd gear issue only happens when I slow down and push in the clutch, when I'm coming to a stop. I know this happens, so I just keep light pressure and it stays in gear.” Says this began shortly after a 1 inch body lift.

#3 being my main concern.. Comments??????

If the price is right and you want a CJ, get it. The issues you mention are repairable and not uncommon problems.

The T/5 2nd gear is down or toward the rear of the Cj. The body lift could have brought the shifter closer to the body itself and may be coming in contact with the shifter. Once the clutch is engaged and the brakes are applied the body applies enough pressure to pop it out of gear. That's my guess since it started after the body lift. If so a little clearance can be gained by trimming some sheet metal in that area.

Yeah, that is pretty steep. I can't imagine that it is a high demand vehicle, since it does require a bit of work.

Everything I look at below $8K is trash.

Our local trading rags are not much help.

Drove a 500 mile roundtip lat week to Virginia, to look at a seller rated 9.5 of 10 for $5500.00 that had rust holes in the floor, rust on hood, worn out suspension!

Did notice that asking prices for CJ's seem much higher here in the eastern US than most other places...

Suggestions on where too look. Local rags, and Craigslist have the same overpriced Jeeps.

Hard to tell without pics but sounds over priced to me.

At that price I would be tempted to let you have mine, but it doesn't look nearly as nice and it doesn't run either.

Yeah, that looks pretty rough on the outside. I'd bet the inside is even worse. Those are available here. Nothing I'd be interested in.

No different than purchasing a used Harley. If it looks like :dung: on the outside, you can rest assured it's worse on the inside.
 You think that looks pretty rough wow. Go ahead and buy something with new paint that you have no idea what it's hiding and let the crying begin after a couple of years when it starts cracking and bubbling. I would buy a Jeep with old paint long before one with new paint.

SearchTempest: Search all of Craigslist nationwide & more is a website that will search Craigslist ads for the terms you input, for the distance from you that you select. It also searches ebay ads.

$9500 sounds extremely high for what you described. Jeeps seem to command a premium price in Texas as well, but what you described might go for around $5500.

Definitely agree. Be very wary of anything that looks pristine on the outside, with recent paint. In 2011 I bought an 85 CJ in its original paint in Southern California. I paid 7K, I thought it was a little high at the time but it was there for the taking. No rust surprises ever. I went and looked at loads of Jeeps prior for around 5k-6k. All rust buckets.
