'82 CJ7 stock 258 and stock drivetrain...for now
Hey all, brand new to the forum and starting on my first Jeep. My shifter (5-speed) on my '82 CJ7 is VERY sloppy. There's a ton of play in the shifter when it's in gear. I haven't had a problem with it slipping or shifting, but I want to clean up the play. Looking for any advise/experience so I can tackle this.

Thanks in advance!!!

If you take the cover off the top of your tranny tunnel and look at where the shifter atatches to the shifting rod, I would bet that the plastic bushing is worn out. Assuming that you have the T-5 transmision.

Some guys seem to hang on to those weak gearboxes and do just fine, but then they don't do stuff like install Detroit Lockers, big tires, and V8s. It does have a 4.03 to 1 low ratio plus an Overdrive , which isn't all that bad.

Just to support those light duty tranny's, I went against the masses advice and had my T-5 rebuilt a year ago. Glad I did so far. I offroad frequently with lockers front and rear. Though, I don't do crazy mindless things that risk tearing something up.

A friend of mine had the original SR4 in his 81 till last year and the only problem he ever had was the shifting linkage and that was because he got excited and tried to bully the tranny into gear. He replaced it with a T-5 from another friend that has been wheeled for years without any problems. He's running 38.5 tires and E lockers on both ends. These weaker transmisions will give good service as long as you don't abuse them.

Ive got the T-5 . Had the same issue. The retaining clip was broken in 3 pieces, and the Rubber bushing had disintegrated. Also, the square end of the shift lever that mounts to the tranny had become slightly ovaled. I squared it up in the jaws of a vice and replaced all parts. Still a little slop but much better.

I don't want to hijack the thread but we have a lot of slop in our T-18 and the Transfer Case . I didn't see any bushings that could be replaced so is there another option?
I'm not sure about your T-18 or the Transfer Case , But most transmisions have some sort of wear surface on the shift forks. That can be a problem and also check into the transmision cover and check for wear parts at the pivot points. Most likely the slop in the Transfer Case is the linkage between the shifter and the Transfer Case .

I'm going to order the parts to clean up the shifter slop. In the meanwhile, I picked up a T-18 for a steal and have it just in case. I'm not going to put it on unless I grenade the T-5 .

Hesitant to install the T-18 anyway for a few reasons; need adapter for Transfer Case $$$, basically only three gears for highway driving which it my primary goal for now, having to replace and install a new Transmission ...

Got some work to do on this Transmission ; shifter slop and clutch linkage rattling, but think I'll keep it in and clean up the T-18 for now.

I haven't taken mine apart yet to see what is worn out so I'm not sure. You should take it apart first to see what you need I gave you the link because it has all the parts you would ever need to fix that Transmission . If I was to guess I would say that is probably what is worn.

Ok, thanks. I'lltear into it. Thought maybe you'd already done that. Keep you posted.

Jeep's stuck in the shed until the 18+ inches of snow we have starts to melt which will allow me to get it into the garage with heat, electric, and tools. I'm itching to tear into it and get a ton of stuff done, but God is telling me to chip away at the honey-do list for now...

Aww the honey-do list it keeps alot of us from our toys :D
