Hey Guys,

I'm going to invest in an EFI set up for my 85 CJ7 AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l . Does anyone have any opinions on the two below? Thanks

Engine Sniper VS Holley EFI
What kind of bung are you using? Clamp on or weld on

When I tried the Holley Sniper, nothing but issues. Could never get it to idle smoothly or keep the A/F ration in check. Finally returned the system. I'm using the Edelbrock Proflo and love it. Easy setup. Handles both fuel and spark. Bluetooth to phone or tablet for control and tuning. And it's true multiport injection, not TBI. Good luck to you.

Another thing that hosed me up lately was I also replaced my Sniper 02 sensor with an exact replacement, Bosch O2 and until I put my original back on I didn’t realize that the replacement one was giving me bad AFR numbers so that screwed things also. Now it’s running great with the original O2 sensor now.

The PO installed a Howell TBI system in my CJ5 . I've got conflicting views on it. I liked the performance and fuel efficiency, but at the same time it never ran 100% right, even after adjusting or replacing just about every part. After ten years it completely broke, and it would of cost more trying to troubleshoot the electrical problem, then just pulling out everything and replacing it with a Carter 2 BBL. In my view, these aftermarket injection systems add a level of complexity to what is such a simple to maintain vehicle. Sure I'm getting worse gas milage now, but if something goes wrong, I can fix it or find someone to fix it. When I had the Howell TBI, no mechanic would touch it with a ten foot pole.

I had issues when trying a Holley Sniper a few years ago. Finally pulled it and sent it back to Holley. Maybe better with newer versions today, but they lost me as a user. Using the Edelbrock ProFlow system now and love it. To jzak's comment about adding more complexity to an otherwise simple setup, couldn't agree more. But for drivability, easy starts in cold weather, no waiting for warm-ups, maybe some better mileage (a small bit), no issues at higher altitudes or extreme angles, and other benefits (remote start, etc), some added complexity is a good trade-off. Depends on how you use your rig I suppose. Mine is a daily driver and EFI makes that more pleasant. But again to jzak's comment, you do need to be able to work on it yourself though. Most mechanic shops won't deal with such radical aftermarket changes/add-ons they didn't install.

I agree with you guys. All good stuff. When I was looking originally I thought about going with the Jeep aftermarket system. Then it got scarcer and more money. I was seeing there were people having problems with the Howell system and codes and what to do. At the time the Sniper sounded pretty good. If I was never going to the mountains and off camber angles I would jump back to a carburetor. Who knows, I may end up back there anyway eventually. I get somewhere above 17 when I have checked mileage.

The CJ5 I just purchased has the Holley system on it. It starts really well but bringing it home yesterday I had a couple of misfires at 60mph and today I've got a really strong fuel smell in my garage. I'm not sure if they're related but it's my weekend task.

I dislike Howell it's not user friendly and pia to tune. I have here recently installed an Aces system on a guys Mopar. Cost wise it was quite a bit cheaper than the Holley. I'm waiting for tuning and long term drivability before I start to recommend it over the sniper.

This is the kit I installed if anyone is interested in their own research. I don't know if they make anything for the Jeep or not.
