So, in following this thread http://www.jeep-cj.com/forums/f7/starter-solenoid-issue-12935/ about a solenoid it was mentioned to disconnect everything to the solenoid to avoid frying everything as well as the possibility of switching the ignition and start terminals.

Can you expand on this? I'm trying to use some of the excellent troubleshooting tools here to try several scenarios before I post any problem.

If you had these switched, would that create the buzzing from the solenoid or would it get no action at all?

If you had these switched or attempted testing as listed elsewhere here without disconnecting, what all would be fried?

I think I had a small problem that may have turned into a bigger self-inflicted problem from incomplete education.

Thanks!

Starter solenoids are about as simple a major electrical part as you are likely to find on a jeep. The internet is full of schematics on how to install them and there should be a schematic with your new solenoid. Also solenoids generally have very clear letters and numbers molded in the case. This is coming from someone that given a chance can screw up about anything. I'm sure you can do it my friend.

I have done it, but more problems have developed after going through some of the testing and great photos in this forum. I have the factory shop manual as well.

I'll post more tomorrow with specifics. Am concerned that I might have done damage in following testing instructions as now there is no power to anything.

There is power from your battery to the battery side of the solenoid, right? If there is attach the power cable to the starter to the other side. Don't hook up any thing else.

Take a wire with power directly from the battery and tap the ignition post (there might be two of them, make sure to hit the right one) with the hot wire. The starter should turn and stop when you remove the power wire. If it does our solenoid isn't your problem.
