Nice video Wooly. Hay guys, I didn't mean to start an argument here. I'm just ignorant when it comes to identifying different type of metal, pipe, tubing, etc. I've never worked with metal before starting my renovation of my Jeep. While building the pipe barn the other day I got curious. So I came to the experts here to ask a couple of questions. My plan for my Jeep is to use some stuff I already have plenty of. 1 3/4 inch outside diameter and 3/16 inch thick, I guess pipe. This is only to prevent injury from the top and windshield from crashing in on me in a LOW SPEED, one time roll over. At high speeds my insurance will take care of what's left of me. :dunno:

It looks like some kind of 'hot-rolled' tubing.
I think it will work fine-THO a bit heavy. But-hey, you all ready have it.
Not sure how well it will take a bend, with that heavy of a wall.

My 2 cents - It will be better than not having it there and if that's what's you have and what you can afford than that's what you should use; knowing that a chromo cage etc would be better. The design of the cage is very important as well. However, I'm no expert and just using my modest experience, design education, and modest common sense. A good helmet is a lot cheaper than a bunch of chromo and a custom bender [emoji1].

Thanks Lumpy and Wooly. It'll bend 90 degrees if done gently. I've got about 100 feet of the stuff, so I will use it so that I have something other than the one bar behind my head. I will most likely make a brush guard and some rock sliders with it too, although I don't plan on going over any rocks. Mostly dirt roads and sandy beaches.

Bend'n pipe hint-Wipe the area your gonna bend down with motor oil. It helps the bender, and smooths out the bend.

Huh, looks like you drill tube has a yield strength of about 30,000 psi greater than chromo 4130 n if I'm reading correctly.

I figured i'd jump in on this discussion and add my .02
I have to agree with tarry99 on CM. I welds very weld, but requires prep and post work to reduce the brittleness that can occur outside the weld on the tubing.
Personally I refer to the guidelines for the east coast 4wd assoc., the sanctioning body for off road racing in the north east since 1969. I may not live there anymore, but I figure they have a pretty good handle on what works. They require min. 1.75 x .120 dom tubing for roll cages or 1.625 chrome moly. they allow 1.75 hrew tubing but usually for bracing or other non structural like seat belt mounts. I figure I will use their guide line and will be just fine.

Yep seen that......Except it's doubtful that is what Peanut Butter has for material since he said it will bend to 90 degree's .............unlike Drill Pipe which is highly tempered to resist torsion and bending while it's a mile or two underground drilling holes hence the need for the higher yield at 134.9 ksi. that you made reference to.

Wooly.............the best thing We can all do here is stick to the facts of the subject along with providing good sound information to the Question & Subject.

That way others coming here for knowledge & guidance don't become confused by statements that are both incorrect nor have any real relevance to the subject.

PB first stated in Post #1 that he had some 2.375"OD Drill Pipe material that he used to build a Pole Barn...........later in post #43 he stated that he now had some 1.750" OD material that he said he would like to use in his roll bar and then in post #47 he stated " It'll bend 90 degrees if done gently.

unlike what you stated above "that it was difficult to bend" Not sure where that came from?

In my eyes the two products are different materials...........one being the 2.375" Drill Pipe that has 135 ksi while the other 1.750" material having the ability to be bent 90 degrees " gently". Anyone in the business knows that bending tempered material is just not going to happen with any good results.

Stick with the facts..........And your personal slighting comments about me going to the race track don't belong here!
