SR4 not shifting right

Okay all, I'm hoping someone can help me out with this. My new to me CJ7 doesn't seem to have a reverse detent - it'll slip right in without pushing down on the shifter as you are supposed to.

I haven't had the time to do much of an exploratory into this situation, so I'm hoping that someone can point me in the right direction in advance.

is it jumping out of gear? that reverse pushdown is on the shift lever itself. maybe your spring on the shifter is wore out or broken. i have a shifter i would send you if you want it

It doesn't jump out of gear - it just shifts too easy. I keep finding reverse when I'm trying to drop to first.

If you've got a shifter to spare, that would be great - how much do you want for it?
