Ok folks,

First, my name is Jeff. Glad to be hear.
I know nothing, so please don't hesitate to chime in.

I just bought a 1963 CJ3b ,
ordered my engine hoist, stand and am beginning the journey of restoring my Hurricane 4cyl.

I want to convert to a 12 volt system.

I am watching the remanufacted $AMC 150 sets on EBAY to change coil, alternator, etc.

Is this the right way to go?
Will I need a new starter?
Distributor?

Our 54 3B is in pieces in our barn awaiting restoration, but I will try to answer a few of your questions if I can.

The spark plugs are a simple thing, Autolite 306 or 295, AC Delco R45

Our 54 has been converted to 12v, but I don't remember what is all in the conversion. I can tell you that when I converted our 41 Farmall to 12v, the process was pretty simple. We used a GM 10SI alternator. This alternator is a single wire hook up, and the regulator is internal. I am pretty sure this is what is in our 3B. I know the entire kit is available at places such as Ebay. I know the kits do not require the use of an external resistor like my conversion uses. All in all, a pretty simple conversion.

Carburetor? If you are proficient at rebuilding a carburetor, you can get a rebuild kit for around $15, otherwise a rebuilt one will run anywhere from $130 to $350.

I know on my 41 Farmall, I did not have the 6v starter rewound for 12v. It sits in the barn all winter waiting for snow so it can go and plow our driveway. Even cranking in below 0 weather, the 6v starter has never failed us. I don't crank until the battery goes dead! I let it cool off for a few minutes after cranking for 2 or 3 10 second cranks. Maybe someone can weigh in that has actually done this to a 3B.
