Hello, this is my first thread, hopefully I get the response I need. I am curios why my 80 CJ5 stalls when I HARD break...?
The Master Cylinder DOES leak..need a new seal I think(but dont know where to get it from) so Im thinking I may be the problem..But this would have nothing to do with the ENGINE itself..The guy I bought it from, put in a (what I think) a Weber Carb..so maybe this is the issue....
HOWEVER--the question is ...Why does it stall when I break "hard"?
Like surprise light changes--traffic--etc.:D

1. does it have power brakes? If so, there could be a serious vacuum leak as well as the MC leaking. It could cause it to stall..

2. Does it stall when going over speed bumps, inclines, declines when you ARE'NT braking? If so, it may have less to do with the braking system than carb issues. I say that since you mentioned the PO putting a different carb on it.

Let us know what you discover..

Thanks Brian,
I'll have to follow all the lines, and see what I come up with...Start with the "most obvious" first. Before I drop some serious $$$ in it, I did notice, however..that many of the PO hoses are/were dry rotted.
So, I'll probebly take a few off..get new ones, take a few off, get new ones....The great part about this CJ5 is it's "road-ready", and NOT my Daily driver--So I got time to tinker around with it.
--Thanks. :chug:

It sounds like the reason your engine stalls after a hard brake is due to worn bellows inside the mbc.
