All,

I have a 79 CJ7 with a 360 from a 79 Wagoneer. It has a T-176 Transmission , though I am unsure of the year (might not matter). The Jeep starts great when dead cold, but when warm (even after run for a few minutes), it suffers from weak engine crank. It sounds like the battery is dead and the starter is moving slow.

I talked with a friend and he thinks its the starter. I don't know the age/make of the current starter, but is the larger OE-style one. Does anyone have a starter brand they recommend? I'd like to stick w/ the OE style (solenoid on the starter). I'm eyeballing the Powermaster 3212 or the Power Select 3212N.

Thanks!

How old is this battery?
Go to NAPA, and have them load test the battery.
If OK on the battery-get a starter there.

LG - I will do that. Thanks for the suggestion. What do you think of the high-torque starters? Do you think it would be overkill?

Go with NAPA Gold line OEM type ..........

Could be a case of heat soak, how close is your exhaust pipe/manifold (headers) to the starter. A heat shield maybe needed. Also how heavy are your cables to the starter? If to lightweight they can't carry enough current when hot.
I like the Powermaster line of starters and alternators, I have a PM starter on mine.

I think it probably is related to heat soak and I've heard new production starters handle it better, plus this starter sounds tired anyhow. Starter is a few inches from the factory manifolds (not running headers) but seems to have enough clearance. I have all new cables (4 AWG). I'll get some pics tonight. Could heat soak take place in 10-15 minutes of run time? Starter isn't hot to the touch.

What type of Powermaster do you have? I am eyeballing the 3212.

I believe it's a 3510 PM starter, I've had it awhile, also have a 00 cable to the starter. As LG said have the starting system load checked, most of the parts chain stores do it free. Heat soak can happen in a very short time if the conditions are right. If the starter isn't hot to the touch, then its probably not the issue.

Mount your GND lead from the battery, to the top mounting bolt of the starter.
