Greetings fellow Jeeprs,

I have been a Jeep lover since I was a kid and have had 6 of them Through the years. After a short stint owning some newer Jeeps, I’m Back with a CJ
here is what I got:
I got this Jeep about 6 months ago, as a non-running vehicle.
It is a 1981 CJ7 with a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l that had an HEI ignition and a California emissions legal Howell fuel injection installed. It came with 35” tires and the lift to go with it. It is a beach car so lots of rust. But the previous owner started to address some of the issues. He just ran out of patience.

I got it running and got it to pass smog. Drive it around daily for about 4 months. Drove fine but the old T-4 was completely shot. Popped out of gears, synchros were dead on 2nd and reverse and with the 4.88 gears in the diffs, I decided to have the Transmission replaced by a T-5 . Against my gut feeling, I decided to have a shop do it, to save time and frustration.

Well, after a month, I got the Jeep back. Drove it for less than a mile and noticed a loud noise. Here are the specifics.

Noise wasn’t there until I shifted the Transmission into 5th gear, then neutral.
Noise is there when clutch is in, or the vehicle is in neutral.
Noise stops when vehicle stops.
It’s a high pitches clanking noise. Like something is loose and rattling around. Coming from Transmission /Transfer Case area.
It is also there between shifts, once you get it, which comes from shifting into 5th or sometimes 4th gear. But it is very faint.

The shop claimed they rebuilt a second T-5 and put it in, but the noise is till there. So they have washed their hands if it and say it’s something else.
At this point, we have replaced clutch and pressure plate. Resurfaced fly wheel. Clutch bell crank and links. They have reshimmed output shaft on Transfer Case and preloaded it.
Took it to another shop, they can’t figure it out either.
First shop claims it’s the drive shaft.
Second shop claims it’s the Transfer Case preload on the output shaft. (First shop says no, it was shimmed and preloaded correctly)

Odd thing is, with the busted T-4 Transmission , I never heard this noise, so not sure what it is or where to go with it.
Rear Diff has been checked and it’s fine.
First shop says it’s the drive shaft.
Second shop disagrees.

First time listing so not sure what other info to include. Thank you for any wisdom you can throw my way.

Thank you. The odd part is, there is no noise sometimes between gears 1-4 and everything sounds great and drives really well.

Get under your Jeep with some wrenches and check everything you can.
Check your u-joints and the engine and tranny mounts. Make sure the skid plate bolts are tight-All 6 of them.
Do you have a REAL factory service manual(FSM)? If not-Get one, and I don't mean Haynes or Chilton.
Also-Be sure the Transfer Case shifter is not hitting anything like the body.
BTW-Under Ca, consumer law. That shop 'can't wash their hands of it'. Do some research.
I don't think they put a another T-5 in. These old T-5 's aren't that common any more.
That's why I have a spare sit'n on a self in my garage.
Also-No 'synchro' in reverse. Bump it into 1st then to R.
