Has anyone used one of these Summit Racing HEI distributors on their AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l ? I've been reading threads about the pros & cons of an HEI style but wondering if anyone has used this specific one and if so, what is your review of it?

I have not, but after putting a DUI, HEI in my 360 I am a big believer in using an HEI dist. everywhere possible. I'm not sure what a Racing dist. would do for you, they are usually set up for high RPM operation, generally a Jeep isn't used in a high RPM environment. Low RPM. High torque is the way with most Jeepers and a slightly less expensive dist. will do that just fine.

GM used them in everything for a very long time that should tell you something.

I don't think it's actually specified as a "race" part but "Summit Racing" is the brand/manufacturer of the distributor. The distributor is made specifically for the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l engine in the CJ Jeeps.

Okay, okay - I read Racing Distributor. D.U.I. does offer a racing distributor which will work above 6000 RPM, the standard D.U.I. dist does not work above 6000 RPM. I don't think it was so far fetched to assume we were talking about a racing dist.

I did the HEI conversion using the GM 4.1 distributor and the AMC V8 timing gear and adjustable vacuum advance. The money spent was about the same as the aftermarket distributors. I just couldn't confirm that the aftermarket distributors would accept OEM parts. I used the "Mr. Gasket" mechanical advance kit. I don't remember who makes the adjustable vacuum canister I'm using but, you need both to advance the timing very early on the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l . You can run a lot of advance on these motors without pre-detonation at higher RPM. I was afraid I would end up buying extra parts if I purchased an aftermarket distributor.

I have the D.U.I. and would feel save to assume that summit and D.U.I get their parts from the same place the HEI is a banging unit really wakes up the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l , and clears a lot of wiring out. the price is high, some guys might want to spend the money elsewhere.

I hope that's the case about the two using the same parts. The price of the Summit Racing brand one I ordered was only $149 so I'll keep my fingers crossed it's not half the quality just because it's half the price. :p
