This morning, we noticed a new sound coming from what seems to be the Transmission . It's a sort of hissing sound, "SHHHHHHHHHHH," that rises and falls with the RPM's (when the Jeep is in gear and moving).

If I push the clutch in, the sound diminishes until I let the clutch out (again, while moving).

I have an idea of what may be the issue, but it may be wishful thinking on my part, as it would be a simple fix.

So, what says the hive-mind?

Let's go with simple first. Does it hiss when standing still, and change sound with RPM's? I would start with a simple vacuum leak.
More complicated is the clutch, but there could be many facets to that. Check for a vacuum leak first.

Don't hear it standing still, but it's possible that it's there. My bet would be not vacuum, as it's not a "sucking air" sound. It's a mechanical sound, but an odd one - no squeal or knock. It's mainly concerning because it's never been there before.

How much free play is in the clutch pedal? If you don't have free play, your throw out bearing will always be engaged, and it won't take very long to burn it out. If the bearing runs dry due to loss of grease from over heating, it will make hissing or grinding sounds.

CK the oil level in tranny and t'case ASAP!

Well, the problem has evolved. Not in a good way.

So, the sound is present when the Jeep is stationary, not in gear, and I let out the clutch pedal. No sound when clutch is pressed in.

Now, however, when I put the Transmission in gear and let the clutch out, nothing happens. There is no drive. It's like the friction plate isn't engaging at all.

I assume this means I need a new clutch.

But is it odd that it went out all at once? Hardly any warning at all.

Although a clutch can just fail suddenly, it is kind of rare. Are you sure that your Transfer Case is engaged and not in neutral? Try both high and low ranges. If the Transfer Case is in gear, kind of sounds like you are going to have to take a look at the clutch and pressure plate. I have had them fail completely within 50 to 100 miles of first noticing weird sounds or a change in the feel of the clutch pedal.

Doh! Should have thought of checking the Transfer Case .

That aside, sounds like most people think it's the throwout bearing.

So now it moves?
Throw out bearing is a very common problem.
If the clutch is in any way questionable, I would just replace the entire assembly. I just paid around $90 for the entire kit, clutch disc, pressure plate, throw out bearing, and pilot bearing. Kit also includes an alignment tool. Not worth having to do it over if another component fails down the road.

Who's selling clutch kits for $90.00?

So, I was reading the FSM, and it says if the noise goes away when you press the clutch, the problem is likely the clutch shaft or countershaft bearings. This sounds like a much bigger job than replacing the clutch.

What am I about to get myself into?

No way to know til it's apart.;)
The first 2 items you want to inspect is the T/O bearing and the pilot bearing in the f'wheel.
Then check the play(wiggle)of the tranny's input(clutch)shaft.

I don't think I seen where you ever answered this OP - before dropping the tranny (if you haven't already) check your pedal freeplay for specified slop (freeplay) and make sure it didn't just change a bit... This could be a super easy fix - unless you've already checked this, this is the first place I'd check.
