I am new to the group and reading threads from others has helped me understand this Transmission quite a bit. Lots of folks with lots of knowledge and since this is my first jeep it is much appreciated. I had an issue yesterday where the jeep acted like it was stuck in 1st and the shift linkage would not engage in any gear from the shifter. So I read all of the threads I could find on alignment of the forks and downloaded prints of the tranny. I have the shift arm off (removed the retainer with the detent by 1/4 turn rotation) and I can see in side. I removed all of the bolts on the top cover and tried to lift it off. I can pick it up about 3/4 of an inch and something is stuck keeping me from removing the cover. What did I miss? The only thing I did not remove on top was the pin with the e-clip on the side. Does that need to come off? I want to remove the cover and realign everything to neutral and replace. I think the linkage popped out or either the forks are misaligned. Can't figure out how to get the top off and I don't want to force it and break something. Any help would be appreciated.

OK, so I finally got the shifter out (what a pain in the butt). I have it aligned to neutral. Does anyone have a picture of what the gear alignment in this Transmission looks like so that I can move it to where it needs to be to put this back together?

I used to have the same issue, would happen anytime I would shift from Rev to 1st while rolling. Would be stuck in 2nd gear.
Step 1: remove shifter (push and rotate the retaining ring) lift out handle.
Step Two. Big screwdriver... look into shifter hole and move the gate to the left to the same position with the gate on the right. [ ] <- like this
Step 3. Put shifter back.

Cause is just some worn parts. That brass stuff wears over time.

Thanks deadfeat. After much struggle, reviewing old posts, and much swearing, I finally noticed that the shift lug for 3/4 is broken. So alignment was part of the issue probably, but wasn't all of the issue. I now understand how this thing works (my first time in a Transmission , but I have torn apart most everything else on a vehicle). I have ordered a shifter kit, a new lug for 3/4 and shift yokes for all 3, also ball springs. Will update the group when I get the new parts in.

Post some pics of the broken parts and your install. Glad you got it figured out.

I will post pics when I have it ready to go in. This forum has a lot of great information. I have learned a lot just reading old posts. Maybe mine will help someone else.
