If you think you have a T-176 , might want to look again. If the numbers on the tag riveted on the case ends in 389, you have a T177. If it ends in 390, you have a T-176 .
While a major Transmission site says T-176 were put in CJ's that's not quit true. If you look at the parts manual it lists the T-176 as being installed in CJ's for export in 1981. For years 1981-1986, T177's were installed.
Of course it doesn't make much difference which Transmission you have unless you need to replace first or reverse gear, or the main shaft.
Gear differences are
T-176 (M) 3.52/2.27/1.46/1.00/3.52R
T177 (M) 3.82/2.29/1.46/1.00/3.82R
Sorry the parts manual PDF is turned sideways. Couldn't figure out how to turn it.
