I'm going monday to regester my jeep. I understand that Texas has an antique tag. Just wondering what I should go with? My jeep is an 81

I don't know the specifics of the Texas laws but an antique plate is for cars that are only driven to car shows. Can't drive it as a DD any more. You can drive it on weekends and to car shows.

Restricted to "car shows, club activities, parades, exhibitions" NOT to be used for regular transportation. Believe it also requires an additional safety inspection by DPS, which is a "by appointment".

IN mississippi you get an antique tag and thats it forever. I'll just get regular tags

In Iowa, you can use vintage license plates to match your vehicle's year, which is pretty cool. I have a set for my '70 Charger. You basically take them in when you register your vehicle and they issue you a set of new plates and then add the vintage plate to the registration as well. I think technically you can only use them when going to and from a show, but I leave them on year round.

Whoa! Wait a minute. Stop the thread! A 1970 Dodge Charger ! ? ! ?
Now that's damn cool !
I really have to apologise to rr41mag for this thread hijack. Your thread and this site is not about Chargers but I would love to see pictures.
Niedhogg, do you have any pictures or links? The '70 Charger was the epitome of excess. Big muscle cars with huge engines. Who cares about gas mileage when gas is 25 cents a gallon?
Do you have a Hemi, Niedhogg?

Like Busa said, sorry about the highjack...:o

LOL, sorry, no Hemi, just a measly 440... with a 6-pack and a four speed..:D I've owned it about 18 yrs now, originally a 383 four speed (211 produced in 1970), but got it without the original motor and a 440 came with the $700 purchase price. Threw the 440 in and drove the hell out of it for a few yrs, aquired the 6-pack in '04 with a mechanical progressive linkage aND OH MY GOD does that wake up a big block!!! So about 4 yrs ago, as it was sitting in my shop (about 20 miles from my home) and we were broken into. SOBs stole my grill, gas cap, 6-pack air cleaner, guage cluster (cut the harness to get it out and busted up the dash), and a new 850 Holley and a shaker T/A style scoop off a '74 GTO I had at the time. They must have been interrupted by something, my steering column was almost out, had started on the intake and carbs and left the pistol grip shifter.... so it sat for a while, while we tried to track down any leads but nothing came of the investigation, and a couple yrs ago I completely dismantled it to do a full blown resto. Trying to aquire the missing parts has been a pain, and have been researching companies to build a multi port 6-pack FI set up and a 6 speed. I have a rare Mopar Performance high rise intake I will set it up on that should keep it under the hood. A K-Motion front end and hoping to build an IRS for it as well, I'm going for a pro-touring set up with it. The IRS set-up may not happen. I may have some older pics at home I could put up when I get back, and had a bunch on my computer, but it crashed a few months ago and I lost everthing on it...:(

I registered my last 1980 CJ7 as an antique here in Austin. It was no problem at all. It did NOT require a "special inspection" at all. Go in register to any license issuing place as antique - boom your done. If you do this you will be exempt from any license renewals and inspections for 5 years.

It does have restrictions - that IF a cop saw you driving it regularly they might ticket you - However you can always keep in your console a list of parts you are going to buy for your jeep and you can show that to a cop if stopped.

You are allowed to drive it to and from shows, repair places or stores, and to club events.

I never got hassled here in Austin area.

My current (1977 CJ7 ) is not registered as antique though.

That's good to know. I'm almost done with my '73 CJ5 and was looking into getting an antique plate. Thanks.
