things I learned about Spartan lockers today

I found it in the FSM.:bang::bang::bang:

so you assemble the bearings and put the carrier in the axle housing, find the gap with feeler gauges and pull it apart with a bearing puller put the shims plus pre load in and put it all back together.

I hope the engineer that designed this died with out having children, for the sake of the gene pool.

This looks like one more good reason to wimp out and have the 44 built by a pro.:D

And to think , when I started this project I thought I could do it with the carrier still in the axle.:laugh::laugh:

The pain of pressing bearings on and off is why I always use a special set of bearings I have modified (as Sasquach stated) -->> Diff Bearing Set-Up Tip. - Jeep-CJ Tech. Articles

But, just putting a lunchbox locker in does not require any of this since nothing has changed but the internal carrier parts. :)

There is a tool for this or you just modify a set of bearings to slide on and off easilly untill you get the right shim pack and then install the new bearings. Did someone say it was "easy"?

I should have done my research better. I have all the information you have quoted and failed to look. I was not prepared for what I found so it turned into a voyage of discovery.:o

but I gotta say I learned a lot.:D

Easy?? If it was easy anybody could do it, what would the point of that be??:driving:

IO, It looks like you and I took on the same project this last weekend. My OX locker showed up Thursday and Friday morning I though I would take a few hours and install it:laugh:. This is my first time to tear into the Dana 30 and I would like to thank CJ and Sasquach for the modified bearing tip. I figured I was going to be pulling bearings off to adjusting shims and so on. all the while taking the risk of tearing up new bearing and shims just to get it right $$$. I thinking that I can use a brake cylinder hone to modify the old bearings so they will slip on and off easily.

I used a dremmel tool with good results, you don't need to take off much.

I'm confused, why is everyone talking about taking bearings off when in this case there is no need to do so? No change in carrier or ring & pinion= no change in shims.

Confused me also, that is why I posted this statement earlier. ;)

CJ,

Ok, as long as were both confused, life is good! I thought it was just me!

Well IO??????? How's the locker working? I'm really curious because I've been eyeing lunchbox lockers for a while and would like to know if they're as noisy and clunky as some people say? Been thinking of putting one in the rear, but I might start out with just the front for now since it'll only get used in 4wd.

CJ,

I was one of the confused as well, but that's normal.
I was generaly responding to IO's finding no shims outboard on his 30 and lost track of what he was really up to.
Then the bearings started flying!:D

I am glad you did bring up removable bearings because it help me a lot with my OX locker install. It cleared up the confusion for me anyway.
