Original 86' CJ 7
Thanks for looking guys. I have a 86' CJ7 with a AMC 304 motor from 79'. I can't get this thing running to save my life. I recently rebuilt the 2150 carb as of last week. I carefully went through the carb. I did however I set the choke back to almost closed. Hoping to help with hard starting issues. Ever since I owned the jeep the choke has been wide open. All the rest of the adjustments I kept the same. After installing the carburetor I was able to get it run once with starting fluid. It probably ran for 10+ minutes. The choke open as it should & Idle was increasing as it warmed up. I started the idle mixture screws at 2 and a half out.. I started making some adjustments to Idle/mixture screws. I decided to hold off doing any other adjustment till after its driven. Anyway when I turned it off I was not able to get it started again. I replaced everything in the carburetor down 2 the float. New battery, new coil new plugs and starter. I'm getting plenty of fuel at carb. It's turning over but wont run. I'm combing through the vacuum system for the thousandth time. Not sure what to do at this point. Originally I was going to replace carb all together but after talking to weber and summit etc. I could not get a straight answer on direct replacement. However, I just learned today Holley makes one that should work. I really don't want to put anymore money into it. Any suggestions would be greatly appropriated.

Did you check for spark after the engine dies? Sometimes something heats up somewhere in the ignition after running for a while, and you will loose your spark. Set your carb at 1 1/2 turns out for a starting point. You should have to turn them in slightly to get it right. I have never had the screws out that far unless something was obstructing the fuel flow at the needles.

Your engine might be stalling because of too much gas also. A spark plug check should reveal that, or maybe not enough gas. Did you set the float level when you rebuilt the carb?

It may have flooded hold the gas pedal all the way to the floor and try restarting it.

I was thinking the same thing this morning when I read the OP post. Just now getting a chance to respond.

Might be to much choke-use a clothes pin to hold the choke open a bit.
How much FRESH fuel do you KNOW is in the tank?

I really do appreciate the replys...
I have always wondered if it was getting too much fuel at start up. In the past, I would have to barely touch pedal, otherwise it flood. I have never had any luck dumping the pedal to clear it. Maybe I was doing something wrong.
In this rebuild I was hoping that setting choke back to closed and setting float to specs

I recently went through what I thought was a carb/ignition issue, turned out it was a stuck intake valve on No. 2. I hope yours is less of a hassle.

I'd also like to know if you have fresh, unadulterated fuel in the tank.

Gas isnt that old, but I'm still gonna run an external tank with fresh gas and see where that gets me.. I will post with updates...if that doesnt work. Im gonna try to bypass the msd thingy..

sounds really dumb. but you didn't accidentally knock off the "run" wire off of the starter silinoid did you? i did that to myself once and it caused this kind of problem. it would start. but as soon as you let off the key it would die. took me a week of bashing my head off of some walls. then my wife comes out and goes "what's this go to?" one of those alleluia and dang it moments.
