I would recommend a timing light and a vac. gauge for tuning a engine.
I have a plain timing light and never felt the need for anything more wiz-bang. The vac. gauge is also very handy for tuning and finding problems. A compression gauge and a leak down gauge are nice to have also. One disadvantage of owning an expensive timing light is when the wires get caught in the fan.
or get melted by the headers.
