I would recommend a timing light and a vac. gauge for tuning a engine.

I have a plain timing light and never felt the need for anything more wiz-bang. The vac. gauge is also very handy for tuning and finding problems. A compression gauge and a leak down gauge are nice to have also.Torxhead

I have one of the digital advancing timing lights. not sure it is a great and wonderful thing but it also has a tachometer on it. You set the advance and just tune until you line up on 0 deg. If you really wanted to set the timing at 20 deg before, you could.
no matter what anybody says, I do not think a decent timing adjustment can be done by "ear".
I have a hand vacuum pump with a gauge on it. It tests vacuum lines and switches, bleeds brakes and measures vacuum when the engine is running
