I bought my CJ5 3 mo ago and went to title it so when someone decided to buy it I would have the title for them..the PO never registered it and put it in his grandmas name to keep now ex wife from getting it..now, according to the DMV ..she (grandma)has to register it and tag it and sign the title over to me when she gets it and then I will have to repeat the process to get it licensed, unfortunately for me the PO wont take my ph calls as Im guessing he realizes he stuck granma for a total of 403 dollars for her to get this done..so either I have to get a lawyer or find another title for it..any ideas or suggestions on the latter?

looks to me like a title will cost you $806 and a very polite call to Grandma.

IN Ok, you can get something called "title 42". its a way to get a vehicle titled without the original title.
Basically you take the info to the DMV, they verify its not reported stolen and issue you a registration. If after a certain amount of time (like 3 years or so), it doesn't show up in the stolen vehicle files or the original owner doesn't show up, you get the title in your name.
BUT, if the original owner shows, you lose everything you have put into the vehicle to that point, and they get the car.

I'd think about looking into that direction, or the polite call to granma...

Well actually no...the grandmother has to register it first..the 403.00 is her sales tax on the purchase price of 4500.00 including the registration fee..he gave me a signed reciept for 2500.00..plus the 85 for registration so that would be roughly half her amount which I would do if they would let me..I guess they want both her money and mine..I can get a Michigan title for 100.00 but then its an out of state title and I dont know what all that would send flying as far as the DMV here is concerned

Good lesson for all; not ticky no tacky. Don’t let the dollars leave your pocket until the title is present unless there is a lien holder involved and then meet the seller at the bank where the title is held and pay them direct but only when the seller signs the bill of sale. Usually the lender will provide the bill of sale for seller to sign at the time the money is exchanged. Azurevirus, as IOPort51 states, make Grandma your new BFF and do whatever you can to make the process easy for her. You should be able to get her to sign a paper and transfer from her to you all at one time as long as you pay the past due money then take the guy to small claims to recover your loss.

The Certificate of Title is a "Rebuilt vehicle" title..Grandmothers name is on a Certificate of Title Extension Form..apparently the kid drove the CJ around for a yr without legitimate plates on it if any at all
