Engine To Choke or not to Choke? That is the Question!

The Carburetor on your CJ currently has no choke at all... Do you?

  • B) Buy and install a "stovepipe" choke and re-attach the intake tube that was capped with a screw

Ya not getting full voltage will cause problems

Well. I am glad I posed this question as it has produced a lot of good insight and information. Fuel injection will have to wait for now, but I have something to come back to and reference. It's not in the budget at this point. I will be going with an electric choke to start. I did read another post about how to wire it though and can either have it heat while just the ignition is on, only when the engine is running or even just a toggle switch control. I assume that just when the engine is running is best?

Yes while the engine is running would be best. Less chance of it being forgotten and less holes cut into the dash

I have Weber Carbs on Different Vehicles. Each one with electric Choke is Wired for the Engine Running. After the initial adjustments, which might be fine tuned in Colder weather, they are virtually trouble free. And if the "Bimetallic Spring" wears out, easy replacement and sourceable as will yours be. (They 99% of the time stay Open when they Give Up The Ghost)
