Anybody have a factory AMC 304 , 904, Dana 300 combo? Just picked up a 1980 CJ7 like this. Any suggestions/comments on this Transmission ? This will be a trail rig for the wife. Trans worth a :dung:? Also, unrelated, I need floor pans and a cowl panel. Any ideas where to get these?

You sure its a 904? They came behind the 4 cyl models. The 6 and 8 cylinder got the TF999 wich is definitley the better of the 2.

That was going to be my question...

Jeep used the TF999 , I've not run into a 904 from the factory in a Jeep yet, but you know Jeep, whatever they had laying around...

The TF 999, rear right SIDE, there is a rounded 'Bump' or cylinder looking part casted into the case,
See if it has two reinforcement ridges casted into that 'Bump'.
If so, it's a TF-999.

As per Chrysler, and the ATSG, no TF 999 had a lock up converter,
They are VERY clear on this and even post large notices in the rebuild literature.

I've found the TF 999 to be a downsized TF 727, rebuilds almost exactly the same way, save a tolerance change here and there and MUCH LIGHTER...

I will check into this. Assumed it is a 904, as options were Limited in this year range, and can't find much info on which autos were available behind the 8 cylinder. I will be dropping the pan in the next couple of days and changing the filter and will look into this.

DerekCJ5, my '80 CJ7 has a TF999 mated to a AMC 304 , and I believe it is factory rigged. The thing I like about it is that it delivers torque slowly at low RPM, enabling me to pull out of mud and sand without spinning the wheels.

I have not really gotten to play with it much, it was leaking so bad it wouldn't hookup at all. Just a pan gasket, later today I will get it off and change the filter/gasket. I'll report back with what it is. Looking forward to playing with it, hopefully it is a 999

Ok, changed filter and gasket and these are shots I took while under there. On a side note, does anyone have pics of kickdown linkage at carburetor? Hooked mine up as the PO replaced the carb with a nice rebuilt MC 2100 but didn't hook it back up. Need spring placement mostly, and a rundown of adjustment. Have chilton manual but kind of vague.

Ok pics won't load from the phone, I'll get back to it later
