Towing Question

Hi Guys just a quick question, does anyone know the max towing wieght for a 1981 CJ7 .
Reason being the Wife and I are taking our caravan away for a few days. The caravan weighs in at 800kg ( fully loaded 1000kg but we won't load it up it's just us 2 no kids this time :-) )

i have found on the web that the max towing wight for the CJ7 is 2000Ib which equals 907kg.

so going by that i should be ok.

the van is 15ft long, I took it for a test drive and everything seemed ok, if a little sluggish uphill ( i only have the 2.5L engine)

2000 lbs would be about the max. Your little CJ should be able to handle it, as long as you are not running down the highway. The biggest issue I see is the short wheel base up against a fully loaded longer trailer. Also,. make sure your brakes are in good working order, and watch the quick stops. That is going to be your big issue, not getting moving, but stopping it.

That was what i was thinking. All the brakes have been replaced including master cylinder and slave's so they are as good as they are ever going to be

I got her up to a whopping 50mph yesterday, slowing to 40 ish, thats fast enough for me , it's not a race so i get there when i get there, and if i have a mile or so of cars behind me, well hell "It's a Jeep Thing "

i am going to get a anti snake bar though to help stop any snaking of the caravan.

brakes have a huge say in the towing capacity, it has to do with stopping power, Look at the difference of like vehicles with drum and disc and see that brakes hare huge in the rating. Towing something that you cannot stop will cause you to be backward real fast.
