Tranny Compatibility

Both are excellent trannys. The T-176 has a 4.07 first gear and will bolt back in once repaired. The T19 has a 5.11 first gear and will require an expensive adapting job.

The T19 is an excellent tranny but (as stated) it's expensive to install because of the adapters you would need. What make is the T19?
You could get a Ford T-18 but you would need an adapter for the TCase. Check out this link: You could get a Ford T18 but you would need an adapter for the TCase.
The T 176 is a very good tranny. I would just replace or rebuild it.

Transplanting a Scout T19 requires a new front shaft and an adaptor plus another adaptor to mate your Dana 300 to the back of the case; the cost of the synchronized granny gear is just about prohibitive.

Thanks for the help guys. I clicked on the link for the Ford T-18 but it no longer works. I guess the best option is to either replace or repair the one I have. If I looked for another one where would be the best place to look.

I live in Oklahoma and I searched for well over six months to find a T-176 in state before I found one on craigslist. I got a T-19 as well, same time period. A T-18 was virtually impossible to find. I went with the T-19 as the synchro first seemed alright with me, I plan to use the adapter. i only ended up with the T-176 because I was looking for the bellhousing and ended up with the whole unit for a good deal. Seems the yards here could locate them east, but never in state. Best of luck with your hunt.

The T19 has a 5.11 first gear
Just to clarify the T-19 came in both close and wide ratio with at least three options 6.32, 5.1, and 4.02 the 4.02 being the most common.

I have done the T19 change in a previous jeep. I loved it. And would do it again. I was talked into it by Novak.
All Ford models behind the 302/351/300 in the 80's use a 6.5 inch input shaft that does not need modified. you simply add a bronze pilot bushing to the crank to make up the 1 inch difference.
The T-176 /T-150 bell housing is what is needed. You will need to modify one hole.
For the clutch. Just buy a clutch kit for a 1979 CJ5 with a T-18 . It is exactly what you need.
The Novak adapter is great. My setup was a Dana 20 and not a 300 but the trany is easy to work on.

Scout T19 are the only 6-1 versions. and it is not a syncro first gear.
I found in my research, Ford T19 from a 80's F150 or Bronco were 5-1 syncro first and thats what I ended up using.
I did not find many 4-1 type T19, but I while I was looking, everyone that claimed to have a "low geared T-18 " actually had a 4-1 version.

Lots of good reading on Novak site.

Look forward to seeing the outcome and a build on it.

:)The T-18 and T-19's are both Borg-Warner Transmissions , the scout version T-19 is a lot tougher to adapt simply because it uses studs and most Bell Housings are not open on the bottom........The T-19 is a good option with the 1st gear syncro. The 6:32 low version was only available for a few years and only in the Ford Super-Duty sized trucks and some 4-wheel drive trucks. I have never seen one but they do exist. The 5:00 version is more common and does a good job.
It's older brother the T-18 is still the most commonly swapped granny low Transmission .........and parts are easy to find.

:D:D:D:D

by far not the cheapest route but a lot of interesting trannies and parts on ebay

t176 transmission | eBay

At $700 thats not to bad for the Transmission and Transfer Case . I just sold my T-176 with the bell for $325. Dana 300s in good shape go for $250 to $300 and Ebay is always a bit higher. I dont think Id be hitting that buy it now at $950 without some rebuild paperwork.
