Hey everyone,

soooo, i'm trying to figure out which automatic Transmission my CJ7 was born with, i believe it is the original engine/Transmission /Transfer Case set up. i'm thinking TF999  and no i have not crawld my big :censored: under it yet, 12hr shifts at work leave me no time for the finer things in life. any help would be very appreciated

Since you don't have a QuadraTrac your V8 should have a TF999 . See -->> http://www.jeep-cj.com/forums/f105/automatic-cj-transmissions-12123/ and for a bunch of info on CJs -->> Jeep CJ Comprehensive Database - Drivetrains at Jeep-CJ.com

One thing is from what I understand (I have been wrong) the TF999 was for the I6, is the V8 a swap? Could it had have a 4 before? Then it would be a TF904 .

Can you post the VIN? Don't worry about the last 6 numbers.

VIN -
3rd digit = Transmission - A = Auto, F = 3 speed, M = 4 speed
7th digit = Engine - A = 258ci 1 bbl, C = 258ci 2 bbl, E = 232ci 1 bbl, H = 304ci 2 bbl

Ok, the 3rd digit in my vin is a D. I did the vin decoding on the inner web while I was on break (yeah, I'm at work 😎) and it came up AMC 304 auto with part 4wheel drive.

CJ, the VIN# J0D93EH. i had seen the post by Busa and that's when i became confused about my Transmission because i did not see anything for a v8 automatic w/o the Quadra Trac :dunno:. thanks for the help

If it has the TorqueFlite 904 it is a Chrysler light duty Transmission , they can be built pretty strong but in stock form they are a light duty slant 6/ 318 2 barrel Transmission not as good as the GM Turbo 400 in the QuadraTrac system. Also make sure your kickdown linkage is hooked up and working the TorqueFlite Transmission will burn up with out it.(thinks its still in park and does not provide enough fluid pressure so the discs slip til they fail) the internals from a TF 999 will net you a slightly lower first gear with or without a lock up torque converter depending on year of donor Transmission :chug:

And we have a winner, I think.... The wardon (wife) gave me a reprieve from bathroom remodeling, so I went out to the garage and looked up underneath the cj and from what I can tell, it's a TF999 .
