I'm putting a 4.0L from a 99 wrangler into an 82 CJ7 . I want to run comfortably to 75 on the highway with 32" tires.

Any suggestions on a good sturdy tranny.

For the highway, a 5 speed is the easy answer. Now, which one? Other consideration is, what kind of off roading will it see? What gears are you running currently? Novak is a wealth of information to help with your quest because your probably going to need an adapter (or two) to pull this off.

Much of that has to do with your R&P ratio. What are you run'n now?
What tranny do you have now?

For a 5 speed, an AX15 or NV3550 would be my suggestion. These came in YJs, TJs, & XJs and are cheap to adapt to a Dana 300 .

But it's going to depend a lot on your axle ratio and if you want to change it. If you have 2.72s, then the 5th gear is going to be pretty useless. For 32s, somewhere around 3.31-3.73 should make for a nice hwy cruiser with O/D. For the 2.72s, a 5:1 T19 would get you the same spread as a 5 speed but in a shorter package (if you need it).

Currently equipped with a T-4 , which I understand is ill equipped to handle a 4.0L. Plus it will need to be rebuilt.

The differential is the stock 3:73 I believe.

The guy at the salvage yard has the tranny that came with the wrangler. I assume it's the AX15. I wasn't real hip on the shifter location moving back as explained in an article I read.

You really need to confirm your R&P ratio.

When I installed my ax15 is was 1/2 to 3/4 inch back from what the T-5 was originally located. I believe the T-4 is located about the same.

I could be wrong, but I dont believe 3:73's were an available OEM option. 2:73 or 3:31's were the available ratios in the 80's. If you have 3:31's, you'd find 5th gear useful for flat highway speeds. If you have 2:73's, any 4 speed will be fine. I'm still running 2:73's with a T19 and I'm running around 2k on the tach at 70ish

You want 'deeper' R&P gears to really make that 5th gear useful.
That 4th gear on the T-19 is a 1/1 ratio. 2K rpm, is almost lugging then engine.

The T-4 and T-5 I believe have the shifter in the same location. I went from a T-5 to an Ax15 and used the same location hole for me shifter. The driveshafts need to be modified due to the Ax15 being a longer Transmission . To me the AX15 is the best 5 speed that you could put behind a 6 cylinder daily driver Jeep. It was totally worth it for me.

YES-T-4 & T-5 shifter are in the same spot. ;)
They are also, physically the same size.

It looks like you are correct. Of what I can tell the axle is a wide Track AMC20 , stamped with a "D" Which would be 2:73 Open (not Trac-Lok).

Very common for a PO to change R&P ratio.
That why it's best to pull a cover and do a ring & pinion gear tooth count to confirm what you have.
2:73 is the worst AMC ever used......
