Hi I have a 1980 CJ5 I bought for a very small amount of money. My son and I are trying to spend some quality time at the garage ( my attempt to get him off the xbox).....One big question....i stripped the entire engine ready to lift it. I guess my question is....Which bolts do I take off after I take the engine mount bolts off? do I take the bolts off where the Transfer Case meets the Transmission ? Please help we are stuck....

If you are pulling the engine as in for a rebuild I would support the Transmission and remove the bolts between the bell housing and the Transmission . this will have to come straight forward until the Transmission input shaft is clear of the back of the bell housing by tilting the front of the engine upward. Be careful and good luck.

Kudos for your father/son project. May I suggest getting a good manual for the youngster to refer to--it'll make him feel smart. He may want "his own" tools. Also prepare to lose the Jeep as soon as it's ready for the road. (That's what my son did to me--I seldom saw him once he got his hands on the key to our finished project. Haha--project successful!)

Good advice below. Id add that some garages make it a little difficult to pull the long AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l out above the grill. You may want to remove the grill and fenders to make it easier. Also while jacking the engine out slowly you and your son keep an eye out for any wires or hoses that may have been missed. Good luck and I think you came up with a great way to defeat the dreaded X-BOX. :D

welcome aboard, what's your plans for the jeep? restore, rebuild, or just get running and play. I have alot of fond memories of working with my day in garage on various automotive projects. Have fun. :chug:

Just put my AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l back in my 86 CJ7 . I agree with IO...separate the block from the Transmission bell housing. But support the 'tranny' first. I used a tow strap across the bottom of the 'tranny' using the frame...it kept it up there for months with no issues... The three top bolts between the two are tough to get to if the head is still on the block...if it needs to stay on just use a short open end wrench and take your time...

Good luck... Will subscribe to see how you do in the coming weeks...:)

If it has an automatic Transmission , it will be a lot easier. All you have to do is loosen the bolts on the flywheel to the torque converter and bellhousing and it will come straight up and out with no shaft to deal with.

Invaluable advice. It makes swapping an engine in and out of a Jeep a breeze.
