Could someone offer a definitive answer on the factory recommended oil capacity for a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l engine? I've gotten conflicting info. Some say it's 5 quarts, while others say 6. If I put in 5 quarts, the dipstick level sits right below the "FULL" mark. but If I put in 6 quarts, it s just above it. I always thought its 5 quarts. Thanks for the help!

Depends on the oil pan and filter. Should be 6 but I've seen some only take 5

Thanks bud! So If 5 quarts is putting my dipstick level at the full mark, then that's my engine capacity. 👍

Does the oil pan have a skid plate on the bottom of it ?

There's a small skid plate at the lowest part of the oil pan where the drain plug is.

The owners manual that came with my 84 CJ7 when new, says the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l CID Engine ( includes 1 quart for filter change) is 6 quarts

WR I was wondering what filter you use ? I’ve found several that fit the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l , Most are short and small and couldn’t even hold 1/2 a quart. Most look like maybe a 1/3 of a qt.

I've since given up on the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l and dropped a AMC 304 into my 84. I use K&N filters normal size and they hold about a quart. I am leaning towards a NAPA gold.

I run a k&n on my AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l and it holds 6 quarts with the pan that has the skid plate built in
