Made a deal with a guy today to trade some old CJ parts lying around my garage, for this Warn Winch model#5721. Anyone have any knowledge on this winch? Doesn't come with cable, but he said it works well and comes with front bumper. I know it's old, but I was wondering if anyone on here still runs it and is happy with it, and also how easy it is to rebuild, and maintain.

from what I have read this one is mechanically controlled from the inside of the cab, cables and levers? not my first choice. it is a power out only and the band brake is what holds the spool in place, that may be a problem as well. But when you are up to your backside in alligators a winch of any description is a very cool thing. just be aware of what it can and can't do. It is very definitely a "retro" look.

I like the retro look. I had a PTO winch, but I sold it before ever installing it. I figured the worst I'd be out for it is the soft doors, marker lights, mirrors and bikini top that I'm trading for it. They're just taking up space in my garage anyways. The inside the cab lever operation is something that I'm unfamilier with. What kind of controls/levers should I expect to see with it when he drops it by? Anything in particular I should be looking for on it before I take it? No Alligators here in the PNW to worry about, just black bear, bob cats, and BIGFOOT!

The 5721 has cable activated controls mounted in the cab.
I have a users manual, a parts breakdown and a mounting guide for that winch.
I just uploaded them to Jeep-CJ.com
Go to the "Docs" link and then go to "Jeep Accessories"

Thanks BUSADAVE that will help me out a ton! I spoke with the guy yesterday. He said he has all the cables and levers. I pick it up tomarrow.

Hey guys, I'm new to this forum but I registered because I saw this thread on the Warn 5721. I downloaded and used the user manual that was posted in the documents section. Thanks a ton for posting that on here. I recently picked up a 5721 from a friend and didn't know anything about it. I now have it sitting on my bumper and it is all wired up and working. I didn't have any of the cable controls so I have it wired to an in cab set of switches to control it.

I have one small but big problem still. I can't seem to find the right bolts that will thread in to the front of it to mount it to my bumper? I tried 3/8-16, 7/16-20 and a metric size M10-1.500 that seemed like it was pretty close.
The 3/8 bolts are the closesest fit, they seemed to thread in but on final assembly I can't get them to tighten down. Some will start to catch and then they pop loose.

Can anyone tell me what the threads are on those?
Maybe I have the right 3/8 bolts but the threads are worn out, I'm not sure.

Yes, I think you do have the correct 3/8 inch bolts and agree they may be worn out or stripped.
I would pick up a HeliCoil kit to repair the threads.

Thanks for the reply, another trip back to Lowe's and I picked up some 7/16-14 bolts this time. These ones worked perfect! Threaded right in and tightened up. I had tried the 7/16-20 and didn't try the coarsh thread but turns out that was all I needed. :D

I just picked one up for free, but, no controls. Anyone have a pic of what the controls look like?

You can make your own cables

I bought a 5721 new for my 3B and used it 40 something years-no doubt hundreds of times-with nary one malfunction. I replaced the external band brake with a disc setup and hooked it up to a solenoid but those were the only modifications. In many ways, stronger than the 8274 that replaced it.
