What is this monstrosic Fuel Line?

Well, now that the ignition seems to be working well time for me to think about other P.O. issues.

This is a hard line fuel line that's been in 'BB' since I got her and realative to it's shape and placement this is what I'm accounting longer than normal startup times.

I'm thinking of cutting the hard line, finding a flare tool and run soft (normal) fuel line from at or near the fuel pump.

Before I dive in does anyone have a clear photo of the stock position or better of the fuel line from the pump to the carb?

Looks like a fuel return line.
That fuel filter should be horizontal, and at the least the same height of the carb's bowl, if not a bit higher.
You want the return line at the 12 O'clock position.

That pic is skewed a bit so it appears that the filter is vertical but it is more horizontal. I was reading on another forum about bending that monstrosity with a tool but I think it would compromise the I.D.
Perhaps I'll just cut it off and run rubber fuel line to the carb inlet.

Bend it around a 1" socket.
It's a 1/4" line made from leaded steel, easy to bend.
I have replaced these lines on many Jeeps, with copper tubing.

Gus, bending fuel line is quite easy, I would suggest just go buy a short length. Then start bending it up just to get the feel for it. I do mine very slowly, using both hands and all fingers wrapped around it. I used to put a piece inside a long length of coil spring also.

I'll second that..... I got one from Harbor Freight, or Northern Tool - can't remember, and fully expected it to break immediately. However, it has been fantastic - did all my fuel lines and it shows no sign of wear. I highly recommend one......

Thanks wso much for those pics. It'd been so long since my first O.E. unmolested '77 CJ5 I couldn't remember how it went.
I got some extra fuel line and came up with the attached pics.

That 180* bend, on the feed line just before the filter. Sure looks 'tite' and I wonder if the flow is restricted there.

Howdy LG, the feed line is hard line but the braided line is the return line, I don't like that tight bend either and I'll be address that later once I confirm the O.E. routing.

PLZ confirm the feed line(from fuel pump)is on the right side of the filter, in your last picture.

Yep LG, it's on the port (left) side straight up from the fuel pump. (from the pic it IS the right side)

This AFB was originally set atop a 4 bolt main, steel crank Chev. 350 I had years ago. When I parted ways with that motor my best friend kept the Carter and gave it back to me when that Edelbrock Carter clone burned up on 'BB' I tuned it down using smaller jets and stiffer metering rod springs and it's been working great, once I got it dialed in.

'BB' fired right up this morning after sitting for a few days. Glad to see that. Funny thing, in the shop where I'm taking 'BBB' my '96 GMC there's a '78 FSJ Wagoneer (same year as 'BB') and I noticed that the seemingly stock fuel filter had no provision for a return line. Just a through and through filter.

For the first time ever, 'BB' started up without have to resort to pumping the gas. Just once to set the choke and on the second try she started right up.
