1982 cj7 all stock. has the inline 6 with a five speed tranny.
i can get a lock rite locker for the rear of my AMC20 axle on my 82 CJ7 for AMC 150 . was wondering if that would be a good choice to go with or should i go with a detroit or something else. any suggestions appreciated. thanks!

Whats the jeep going to be used for?

I put a powertrax no slip in the rear of mine, same thing I believe, and I love it. works perfect! and cheap too, the front end I ended up with a spartan locker, same type of drop in locker, and it does not seem to ever un lock, but the 4 wheel drive is never used on the street anyways, so I dont mind.

:edit I just noticed your in an area that gets snow, i would not recommend these for snow/street usage, they are very strong lockers and on snow/ice/slick stuff it probably will stay locked, scary stuff when going up a snow covered mountain road. get a Limited slip, or something that can be shut off for street use, e locker or air locker.

:agree: with a short wheelbase running a locker in the snow and ice you will have the rear wanting to pass the front not real fun so if you use it in the winter you will want to go with a air or ox locker so it on when you want it.

i will be doing some street use, some mudding every now and then when it rains hard, and some mountain trails. i will probably also be driving the jeep in the winter time when it snows. i have heard of the arb air lockers having some issues. has anyone tried the ox lockers?? just trying to see what would be the best all around locker for all around use. thanks!

If it's going to see street use in the winter my advice would be selectable lockers. That way you can turn them on or off as needed.
You could go ARB's (air) Eaton (electric) or Ox whiich can be had with a cable, or electric maybe even air.
They are all strong units.

The Power Trax No-slip is a better locker than the same company's Lock-rite, an Aussie, EZ-locker, etc... noticeably smoother.

The rear locker in winter is not that big of deal. Both me and my ex drove my Aussie'd 6-spd Kj without much more wheel base than a '7 here in the winter with no issues at all for 7 years. People generally think that manuals cause the lockers to lock/unlock more due to creating driveline slack when the clutch is engaged. A friend's wife DD's their auto KJ with the no-slip without suffering any of the "internet rumors" about them being death traps. When someone talks about this ask them for their personal experience with it to judge the weight to give the info.

Run the locker you got, consider a front LSD like the TrueTrac or Powr-lok, and call it a day. Front lockers bring theor own fun when egaged...like the rig not wanting to turn. Personal experience there... :D

Selectable lockers are a huge expense and an unbiased eye looking at them leads some people to question their longevity and reliability, especially the ARB. Your call.

I do speak from past and present experience on this situation, vehicle weight plays a part in this situation also, my jeep is very light, no top, no doors, hitch, extra :dung: etc, so the rear end of mine is more prone to locking and sliding around turns, of course driving style has much to do with it as well, be easy on the gas, and its not as bad

You can eliminate the Eaton E-locker from your choices in AMC20 , they do make it for the front Dana 30 though. I run a Detroit locker in the rear and a True-trac LS in front, If you drive any more than short distances to and from trail I would not recomend a Detroit at all although I am very happy with it off road. No complaints at all with the Eaton True-trac up front.
FYI my only complaint with the Detroit locker is what it does to the road manners of my CJ5 , paved twisty roads are a challenge to say the least. I liked the simplicity of it but not sure I would not do it over again this way and would probably go E-locker if it were available.

I had a lock-right in the rear of mine (AMC20 ) and got sick of the noise, the clicking every time you made a turn and it unlocked. So I switched it to a TracLok, which was affordable at the time and has given me no problems, but then it hasn't been used hard lately. My choice in the front is a TruTrac. My choice for the rear would be an E-locker too, if they made it!

I have Limited slip in my front, what are the thoughts on this. 73 CJ5 with rear lockers 4" lift with 33's. Mainly will be used for mtn trails, nothing to drastic till I learn more.

A LSD is a great option for the front for most people as they do not effect steering nearly as much as a locker but still dramatically increase traction over an open diff. Most everyone I know reports zero to almost zero issues on the road with them even when used in non lock-out apps. Of course with lock-outs it is completely a non-issue when not engaged. I have riden in a few XJ's with LSD fronts and they were invisible except for the added traction. No muss, no dramatics.

Some apps ( Most notably 60's era Scouts ) came with LSD's as options in the front axles. They used the very nice Powr-lok. The later trac-Loc ha a lot lower bias and longevity
