1981 CJ7 258 Inline 6
Its from a 1981 Jeep CJ7 AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l inline 6. It was mounted under the hood on the passenger side fender near the starter solenoid. It basically looks just like a metal box with an electrical board or whatever inside. Whatever it is, it melted to the fender. I took it to Oreilly's and they couldnt figure out what it is. I have looked in Chilton's and can't figure it out. It looks somewhat like an ignition module but doesnt match up to anything at the parts store. The plugs are different. Does ANYONE have a clue as to what it may be? Hopefully the photos will upload and you can see what I'm talking about...

How's your jeep run without it?

HEI is a self-contained ignition system. It may get your jeep running again IF that part is for the ignition. I don't recognise it but it looks stock.
If it is for the ignition then it would crank and crank but never even pop. Verify that you are not getting a spark before you try to replace the ignition.

And, yes, installing HEI is easy.

With this being an emissions part, I take it I don't need it and can just throw it away? Thanks for the info.:D

This was like the predecessor to the underdash computer. It was an idle control that tied various things together such as the manifold heater, the sensor on the air filter housing, the sol-vac, the auto choke, the rear window defroster, the ac, and I'm not sure what else if any. There isn't a lot of info about this part anywhere that I've found. That's the first I've seen a part number for it even. Hagar, where did you find that at?

If you've swapped your carb out to a Weber or something, your probably not going to need it anymore. At least that's what I'm thinking.

The information comes from the factory parts manuals.
But even the factory service manuals don't say a lot about that item.

Thanks. I never thought to look in there. I was looking in the factory service manual and searching online.
