So I decided to do an HEI distributor upgrade to AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l . I read the write ups and went out and ordered the HEI Distributor. The first thing I realized was how much bigger the HEI Distributor was then the O.E.M. Distributor. Then I noticed that there were no wires on the new distributor that connected to the motor. On the old or O.E.M. distributor there were as seen in the pic below. Nothing was written in any of the write ups I read about this. Can anyone clear this up for me. I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do with the O.E.M. wiring.





Here's the O.E.M. wiring I traced to the firewall.

unplug it all... then throw it all out. You need to find a source of 12v power when the ignition is on. that is the power for your HEI. the best thing to do is wire it so you use a relay to get a clean 12volt feed to the dizzy. If you google it there will be a ton of info. If it wasnt 1:30 here iwould try and upload a diagram I have. but comp isnot playing nice with me

sorry.. cant stay away.To run a relay... you really want to.. by a 4 prng normally open relay from parts store. there willbe 4 prongs on the bottom marked 86, 87, 85 and 30.

new wires to install
10ga from hot side of started selenoid to #30
10ga from #87to the Iprong of new distibutor
14ga from 85 to good ground

exsisting wire.
cut the red wire that goes to tdiscoid and hook it to #86

Set up this way you can either leave the stock wires were they are or remove them. I like to clean em out. When the ignition is turned on the relay should close sending power to the HEI. What kind of carb are you running? If it's the stock. BBD with the stepper motor on the back you may want to look into how to set it up like you were doin a nutter bypass or replace it with a better carb.. That would really bring that motor out of it's shell.



To me the red wife in the diagram looks a little confusing. Look like it should hook from the coil to the #86 when it really justneeds to be run straight to tue #86.
