What year did gas tank move
I believe it was in '74. I've got a '73 and it's under the driver's seat.
'70 and newer were under the rear, switched when AMC took control of jeep.
That should be right. My 73 was in the rear and a wheeling buddies 71 is in the rear as well.
They had a tendency around here to rot out at after 6-7 years due to the foam pad between the tank and skid pan. The under the seat tanks were cheaper than the rear tank, so some people replaced the rear tank to under the seat. The indent was still in the body tub and was easily cut out during the swap making it look factory.
I would say that was shot in about 1974.what year would these be?
what year would these be?
Bob, you have much more sound reasoning than me. But I am still confused by the dash and the steering wheel. And others on this site have said that all the CJs in 71 had the tank under the seat. Actually, I'm not sure they are 100% correct. I am wondering if the tank was in either place. Could it be that the high capacity tanks (21 gallons) were in the rear and if you went with the small tank it was under the seat? They are '71's.71 renegades have rear mounted tank, charcoal painted hood blister,a roman numeral ll at the end of the Renegade hoodstripe, and american racing alloy wheels.1971 was also the last year where the front fender well back edge ends right at the edge of the body tub.In '72 they stretched the wheelbase a couple inches and added a couple inches to the rear bottom of the front fenders.'72 up renegades dont have roman numerals on the hood stripes either.'70 renegades are nearly identical to '71s except they have a roman numeral l after Renegade ,underseat fuel tank, the hood blister isnt painted, and they had kelsey hayes steel wheels.

I don't know. I just see conflicting information.

Bob, you obviously know jeeps. What about the dash and steering wheel? They look right to me.This is obviously a new vehicle promo shot and you can clearly see that there is no underseat tank. You can clearly see from the front fenders that dont have the extra 2" at the bottom rear that the jeeps cannot be newer than'71.You can clearly see the 'v6' emblems so they cant be newer than '71 since there was no 'v6' after '71.They have the correct wheels, stripes, and painted hood blister for a '71 Renegade ll,and they arent correct for a '70 Renegade l.Since its obvious from the wheelbase and 'v6 badging' its no newer than '71 and since you can clearly see it doesn't have an underseat gastank its pretty clear that anyone who says 'all '71s had underseat tanks' are wrong.I'm sure someone on the web has posted original sales literature that you could look at.If the jeeps shown weren't Renegade package equipped it wouldnt have been so easy to spot the year but the short nose making it '71 or older and no side fuel filler would still have narrowed it down pretty quick. If there were '70s with rear tanks or '71s with underseat tanks I cant find a period picture of one.
Bob, you obviously know jeeps.
Nomad127 has a '73 with the gas under the seat. That's why I thought some may had the tank under the seat and some (maybe with oversized tanks) were in the back.
I don't know. I am just trying to figure it all out.
BTW here's the site that has that picture:
Jeep CJ-5 (1955) with pictures and wallpapers
Did you guys notice that the pic you are discussing is from, and is labeled as, a 1955 CJ picture? Not saying that is what they are, just the title of the page and pic.
Edit: I found the same pic listed as a '71 reference...about 3/4 the way down...
The Jeep® 462, Renegade I and Renegade II Package « Earlycj5.com
and according to this page The Early CJ-5 and CJ-6 Spotters’ Guide « Earlycj5.com the fuel tank was moved in '72, as noted on this thread a few times.![]()
