1979 CJ5 Renegade 258, t-18 pretty much stock except for a later model aluminum intake manifold and Gronk 2150.
What am I missing here? These mirrors are awful. You can't see squat and there is no adjustment left at the mirror head. Are these defective or is this what you are expected to live with?
Here is the driver's side. This mirror is only good for seeing the ground because you can't tilt it any further up. Shouldn't the arm mounting point be perpendicular to the ground?

We tried swapping them from side to side but it does not help. Is this another case of aftermarket :dung:?

Here is a shot from the front. The arms look like they are the same.

Your passenger side arm is a drivers side one. The pass. side comes out and goes almost vertical instead of sideways like yours or the drivers side arm does. And I just went out and looked at the wifes Jeep quick and the flat of the pinched end of the drivers side arm goes 11:00 to 5:00 (top to bottom), whereas yours goes from 1:00 to 7:00. So could you possibly have them reversed and upside down? I can't picture that in my head so you'd have to try it. Just a thought.
 
The arms are on the wrong sides. Remove the pivot bolt and swap them. Also, you might already know this, the three Philips head screws serve to tighten the adjustment mechanism. Also where the arms are set makes a big difference in the mirror adjustment. Even when these mirrors are perfectly adjusted they vibrate so much you can't see a thing .... well with practice you can make an educated guess at what you are seeing. I wonder if there are any oil filled vibration dampening mirrors available for instance those made for semi's.

Right. The pic is after we swapped them over. There is no difference between left and right as far as I can tell. The arms look identical.

I checked Morris and they do sell a mirror arm that looks like it goes vertical on the passenger side but they also sell what looks to be the mirrors we have where the arms stick straight out.

Are there other options for mirrors? This is driven by a 16 yr. old so I'd like him to see as much as possible.
 
the mirrors blow chunks at anything over a crawl, you can see there is something back there but you have no clue if it is a mini Cooper of a semi- truck. right now I have both mirrors and the pass side is totally useless and I have seriously considered removing it. I have wondered if you fill them with some weight, sand or lead maybe, if they would not shake quite so badly.:cool:
 
You can go Euro... RHD style... mirrors are much better, but they are hard to come by, took me a few months to source them as they were OEM to the rig.

could we have some close ups of these? How is the vibration at speed with these?

Jim - You an always use an adjustable wrench with nice flat jaws and bend the end tabs. I still think they are on the wrong side or upside down. Loosen the philips screws and see if you can get a little more movement from your adjustment socket. I have had them where the socket didn't want to move at all, almost frozen, until the screws were loosened.

Yes, there is a drivers side and passenger side arm. You can buy them separate or as a set.
The problem with vibration is that long skinny arm with no mass to it. The double armed one certifiable posted is probably your best bet for removing vibration. The further a weight gets from it's single linear support, the more amplified a vibration gets. That's why most door mounted mirrors don't have that issue. They do make ones that mount to the hinge of a wrangler door if you happen to have them or the hinge with 3 threaded holes on it. They are real shallow.
 
Still run the OEM mirrors. Put a lg rectangular 'spot' on the bottom of the r/s mirror.

I also have large blind spot mirrors on my stock mirrors. The vibration does not transmit to the convex blind spot guys. Maybe because they sit off a bit and have an adjustment built in. I focus on those and have had no issues.
 
I have Kentrol, way thicker SS and my custom 1 piece SS bushings (did have 1 piece steel). They stay were you want them, plus the blind spot mirror.
On the 2A they shake like crazy so I got some SS from a trucks mirrors and tied into wind shield pivot with a clamp to the OE mirror.
 
Mine shake, but not as bad as most. I can tell what is behind/beside me, no problem, even at 65 mph.

They are flat steel, instead of tube.

So, I don't get email updates anymore... not sure what changed, but didn't see this until now.

I don't have any tremendously up close, but they are definitely larger and better than the orginal CJ mirrors, but I have a cammed up 360 with duals into flow masters in that Jeep and the whole thing shakes, so I can't give you a straight answer on the shaking

If you don't mind my asking, where did you get those fender lights?
 
But it's in Bedford NH. I saw those several years ago on a Jeep rebuilt on the British show "Wheeler Dealers". Liked hem then. I've noticed the equipement on the front of my CJ begins to block the turn signals, these lights would help.
