Solution
There not knobs. There torque head bolts for the roll cage

Early 7s had the cage bolted on down the side. Later 7s were bolted in inside the tub

I was hoping it wasn’t bullet holes. :biggun:

That's where the snaps were from the original factory top
No.

Snaps are closer to the top rail and span the whole distance of the rear tub

Factory 79. See the "knobs" in question and then above them the factory soft top snaps

But they were bolted to the top of the wheel wells. Like you mentioned not for snaps either. Someone had something aftermarket or fabricated bolted on there at one time. Best guess is they couldn't weld and decided torx bolts would do.

Maybe it’s the deck mount for the 40mm. :cj5:

I'll take better pics tomorrow in the daytime

Here is a pic of the older CJ7 rollbar that mounted to the side panels above the rear wheel wells. The newer ones had the rear bars bolted to the top of the wheel wells at the back and the front bars extended down to the floor behind the front seats and were bolted to the floor there (see the second pic). Those "knobs" on the sides above the wheel wells are the bolts that go through the side panels (where the blue circles are in this first pic) and through the holes in the horizontal "flange" of the roll bar at its base (see in the bed of the jeep in the first pic).

Here's a shot of the newer style that bolts to the floor at the front:

Early 79 was the last year of the wheel well rollbar before they went to wheel well/floor mount.
